My Sales Director and I are flying to Guangzhou in March, cheapest Business Class return flights are via Amsterdam and LBA is £300.00 each more expensive. Same flight from AMS as the connecting MAN one but £600.00 more expensive for the pair of us to fly from LBA....bonkers, over the hill yet again.
Supply and demand again. You, as a businessman, must surely understand the concept? LBA - 3 flights a day on a 100 seat aircraft. Manchester so many more flights and so many more seats to fill so lower prices available.

LBA management are constantly on at KLM to increase capacity at LBA which in turn would bring seat prices down but KLM Cityhopper haven't got the airframes and are not currently willing to switch to KLM Mainline and their 737s. Meanwhile most of the LBA flights are pretty full so KLM Mainline will be happy with that, and quite content that to save the £600 you are happy to fly with them anyway - from Manchester.

Seems to me that alot of the flights out of LBA fall under the expensive supply and demand WH.
Absolutely correct, courtesy of that big bad airport over the hill that sucks in all the airlines and most of the capacity like a big black hole. Without MAN, things would be a whole lot different, but our wonderful councillors of the past were so short sighted that they thought it fine for us lot to head west for a flight, with MAN growing rapidly, and now leaving all other airports in the North (with the possibly exception of NCL) picking up bits and pieces only.

Not sure why we should worry, just returned from Manchester and the party conference, passed a fringe event for Climate Extinction campaigning for a 75% reduction in LBA present level of flights to enable LBA to pass air pollution targets..
Unfortunately as I was wearing my lanyard they would not let me in, but they had a whole schedule of u.k. airport flight reductions, but LBA at the top in percentage terms.
The air pollution level on airport roads are way above permitted levels, whilst I am a huge fan of the airport, banning all petrol and diesel vehicles from the airport has to happen sooner then later, or any expansion of the airport is doomed, the link road is vital.
I understand the desire of this forum to increase LBA capicity, but if we dont tackle air pollution in and around the airport, were handing a strong case to block expansion to these people, which will have greater traction then noise, runway extension etc protests of the past.

The fact is - whilst the industry is aware of this - these deluded idiots don't see any unemployment caused by such a reduction. And in turn the Economic decline around the Yorkshire area due to unemployment. And where do they want all these people to go? Into what businesses? You try have that argument with them and all you get called is a "capitalist who doesn't care about the environment". No i'm someone who understands the economic impact of aviation on a local area. Leeds would be fu**ed if LBA suddenly reduced the amount of flying. You cant have a structured argument with them. It's one side only and they stick their heads in the sand when you raise economic points; employment points etc. Been green at this moment costs money. You get money from working.

Looking at the fares filed for KL in J for LBA/MAN-CAN in March it seems base fares are £80 per person for a rtn higher at LBA than MAN. I imagine the lack of competition at LBA could well be the reason. If you look exHUY the fares are even more expensive and seem to be a further £65 more vs exLBA.

If your not willing to fly from LBA that’s your choice. Personally me and my family pay the extra price for the convenience of the airport. We are travelling to Prague in October and it was much cheaper to fly from many other UK airports. However Jet2 had the better flight times just with a higher cost. However LBA does need another airline to increase competition. The price for Barcelona hit rock bottom when 3 airlines competed on the route now the prices are ridiculous and there’s not enough flights.

This is what I can't understand. The airlines think they need to be at Manchester but then due to competition they have to undercut and offer lower prices. It doesn't make commercial sense if you ask me. It's no wonder so many airlines go belly up.

Not quite sure where to put this one but I wonder if this is having an impact on FR - how long before "flygskam" ends up in the English Dictionary!
More in Scandinavia I'd have thought where it's more a bigger thing.
I have had criticism on Twitter for my YouTube channel by the odd person who seems to think that trains should be the only way to travel and people like me are ruining the planet.
One person called people that fly an elite and that they should be taxed extremely heavily.

The problem with these `Loonies` is that they are mostly part of the great unwashed. They are thick and easily manipulated. Either students and or unemployed and in many cases unemployable. Most of them couldn`t afford to fly and their hatred is fuelled, in reality, by their lack of money, opportunity and ability to better themselves. In plain English good old fashioned envy. Their cause will fizzle out because its build on shaky foundations. One cold winter or a shortage of smack and this lot will quickly lose interest. The sooner the better.

The ones who had a go at me weren't. The one was a train enthusiast who seemed to think that trains were subsidising flying and that European short haul flying wasn't needed at all!
Different from the Extinction rebellion type.
In the end they won't stop people from flying but they may make airlines think more greener.

At least with all the cut backs we are seeing, the environmentalists cannot moan about expansion!! It also makes the investment in a new link road look less economically viable, so that would save the council £75M for starters. The really sad thing will be all the local jobs that this will put at risk.

Thats fine Louis but to me £600.00 for driving an extra hour is worth it, my fellow Director lives in Oxenhope so by picking him up we are well on our way to MAN. If it was £100-£200 you think why not but sorry I would rather have that in my pocket.
I think I would rather spend an hour in the local office and go from LBA.
In the not too distant past, I was a police witness in a major Leeds trial, I was worried that I would have to hang around court waiting to give evidence, the Judge agreed that as I had signified I could get to court in one hour, it was vital I spent every minute I could running my business and was prepared to grant my wish to stay in my office.
The police even parked my car for me and returned it, maybe a pay back as I had waived my fees and expenses.

Has anyone told the Chinese and Indians? They are building new airports at a breath-taking rate - 200 planned in China in the next 15 years and 100 in India. These are just two examples, with other countries also seemingly unconcerned about climate change when it comes to aviation - Istanbul for example.

This is the other side of the picture that shows that other polluters are far more culpable than aviation.

Straight to the point there, you took the words outta my mouth! Yes these people are just not in the real world, not quite with it and have nothing better to do than cause s*** to other people's lives!

I have a very very good team so I don’t need to be there all the time and I have a mobile phone should they ever need to speak or facetime me. Technology is a good thing. To me £600.00 is better spent on my grandchildren rather than giving to Jet2 sharholders.
I fully accept what you say, but I would rather spend one hour in the office, if the alternative is one hour on the motorway.
Accept time spent with our grandchildren is precious, they bring such joy.
AS were about to depart on another holiday, only 10 days after returning back from the last, the children wonder if we are spending their inheritance.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
