Whilst I agree there is a certain amount of cautiousness involved re Brexit, we have known about Brexit for two years and any uncertainty over the deal has been going on nearly as long so I don't actually believe that is the reason for a lack of an announcement

I would agree with you to a certain extent Finger as it seems to have been going on forever now. The problem I have with thinking along the lines you express is that, whilst it has been unclear where exactly we would end up, it has been expected that we would end up doing some sort of deal and it is this sort of thought that airlines, who have to plan ahead unlike passengers, must have been working towards.

Everyone I have spoken to never expected any deal to be made public until the eleventh hour as this is the way things normally happen so the months and years of dithering were, if you think about it, expected. Even a week or so ago everyone was still expecting something of this nature as a deal seemed the most logical and satisfactory answer for all parties. However nobody in their right mind would announce anything whilst an air of uncertainty existed as they would end up looking foolish if everything had to change following an eventual announcment.

More recently the odds on a deal have slipped several points as the war of words and infighting has increased and stances on all sides seem to have hardened making a deal less likely as things stand today. My own view is that we will eventually come to a deal but how long that will take goodness only knows and I'm not bright enough to speculate further on that.

Back to the topic though. The scenario outlined above is sufficient for any potential new base/routes to be kept up someones sleeve for the foreseeable future or until we have an answer to the Brexit question. That at least has got to make sense.

Things can change and Easyjet are big at Luton and a key airline at Newcastle both part owned by AMP who own LBA, so group management may look to get the orange brigade here at Leeds Bradford and they would be a fantastic addition if it happened :)

They seem too attract the perfect amount of business and leisure passengers which would be great at LBA. They also have a great selection off bucket and spade routes. They could really help the airport with the likes of Paris and Berlin.

There is not enough business for the big 3 big at LBA....most Monarch flights I flew on from LBA were nowhere near full.....they are in the business to make money, Jet2 and Ryanair cover all the main bucket & spade routes.
I can’t see another new route being mentioned until the Brexit is well and truly finalised.
I have to disagree Monarch,Jet2,Ryanair and TUI all competed with each other at one point and they were all filling planes. Also if TCX could have got the aircraft they would have replaced Monarch. So airlines clearly aren't afraid to compete at LBA.

Totally agree with you Louis . Monarch and Easyjet have completely different business models and the presence of Easyjet at LBA would not replicate Monarch at Leeds , in anyway .....one of the reasons Monarch struggled was the lack of hotel accomadation linked wth their flights , Easyjet offers this . There are plenty of different opportunities at Leeds for Easyjet to look at , that are not served by a competiting , based carrier . I also dont see why Brexit will influence the launch of any new routes at Leeds , there are plenty of new routes being launched , into Europe at other airfields .

All I can say Louis is that when I flew with Monarch (which was my favourite out of them all) and was at least 10 times a year the planes never seemed to be 70% full....we have far too many pax that live on the M62 corridor who find it hard to get to Yeadon and its simple for them to go to MAN...If Easy could make money from LBA they would have been there a years ago...if it works for Jet2 and Ryanair (forget TUi) why don’t Easy use LBA?
I flew with them frequently throughout the years (summer and winter) and they were an amazingly airline majority of the time they were full. I never experienced a Monarch flight when it looked empty. There may have been empty seats but it was never really obvious.

Something to consider is 70 percent capacity of the monarch a320 is about the same as an easy a319 which would be much better suited to short business/leisure mix.

Valid point xboy .

Monarch failed to recognise the threat posed by the low-cost revolution in the skies .

Which would come back to haunt them ..

Monarch’s key short-haul markets became extremely competitive – with “third-party charter” flying retrenching as easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2 expanded.

Monarch had a run of bad luck. The airline was heavily committed to Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt, which was a lucrative winter destination. But in November 2015, the Foreign Office banned UK airlines from flying to the resort because of security fears about the airport.

Easyjet have a much clearer understanding about their business model , target market , customer confidence and funding to promote their presence at a new airport.

IF they came , I am sure they would hit the ground running , although it would be for just a small slice of the cake .....

That the trouble of a situation like this !
We are all hoping for a great bit of news and it may or may not happen even worse it might be a damp squid when we hear what it is.

I would like to point out that the above is not so. If you calculate 70% of a Monarch A320 it is 126 seats. I believe easyJet A319 are 156 seats, still 30 seats short, or am I being too pedantic?

Lol Seasider I didn’t realise I was doing GCSE maths on here. The point is there would be less seats spare on an A319 rather than A320. Personally I’m comfortable with your vigilance and pedantic approach to posts, as long as it’s done consistent and irrespective of poster. I suspect you may be kept busy especially if you also become grammar police

So whatever happened to all the rumoured new routes and operator? Seems to me that with all the TUI, Thomas Cook, Ryanair cut backs + little Jet2 expansion + potential FlyBe down the pan, we are going backwards!!

Good question ! This is from a trip to Harrogate today and in my opinion is what we are up against in Yorkshire.

Jet2 are basing another aircraft for S19 which is a plus and they are adding 3 new routes. Ryanair have dropped and cut back routes but added extra frequencies in addition. Thomas Cook cut back the Turkey routes but added Tunisia. However the whole TUI situation well I won't get into that...

Yes more from Jet 2 and Ryanair staying around is good news but we hoped for so much more.
We have to accept people will happily travel to Manchester so the leakage is continuing and probably accelerating all the time pax numbers at Manchester are booming and they come from everywhere in the North and Midlands

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
