I'm presuming most listeners are still using 25kHz scanners that is you'll be tuning to 134.575. All the
Leeds channels are 8.33kHz based and this can end up sounding muffled on a 25k receiver. Of course this is only part of the problem as aerial, frequency, location, other electrical noise etc can all affect reception of what is a relatively low power transmission that was never intended to be picked up on the ground.

A fair point quik, but these reception issues have been around since long before 8.33kHz spacing was adopted at LBA and coincided with frequency changes and different design TX antennae. Where I live, reception on TWR is substantially better than the primary RAD frequency. But, as I stated upthread, not something pilots are likely to notice and therefore not likely to come to the attention of Tels or ATC. Maybe OFCOM take an interest in such matters but I'm not going there !

I've already posted the above pictures on the Nostalgia thread today (many thanks to Mick Kane for supplying them) but they also belong here, for obvious reasons.

Denville has been silenced! The ATIS is transmitting but there's no speech, not even an 'unattended weather station' loop. Probably pointless if the airfield is shut. Yesterday it was giving visibility of 4000m in drizzle with a wet runway. Only a couple of days late.

Worn it out!

I remember the days when the automated voice of the ATIS was also a controller at the airport. I recall then hearing him at another airport, I think it was Manchester. It was probably sold to many many airports after that.

It still is although said controller retired several years ago. I believe his voice is heard all over the world.

He certainly finished his ATC career at LBA (and started it there too) but he had invented the METCOM ATIS (latterly a Muir Matheson product) by 1991, when LBA introduced it.

I remember his voice. It was so distinctive. Like the Brian Johnstone of the Airport world. He took no prisoners either when doing ATC. I remember one pilot not doing as he was told within LBA airspace and when he landed he was told in no uncertain terms to 'see me' before going home.

I can believe that, WH. I once heard him almost lose his temper with a GA pilot whose RT skills were lacking. And another controller on two occasions. Given what some radar units have to put up with on busy days it's a wonder more breaches of etiquette aren't transmitted!

View attachment 16794Here is a picture of Denville(second from the left) when he took early retirement. On the far right is the late, great Stan Haddock also taking retirement on his 65th birthday. Between them they had notched up 67 years of service in ATC! Jerry White on the left was celebrating 25 years of service in ATC. The other guy is Tony Cairns Chair of the Airport Board. The picture is taken from LBAirmail for Winter 2000, a free magazine available from the Airport at that time.

I remember that picture - in fact, I've most likely still got my copy of the magazine. I remember Jerry was very laid back and Stan had one of those voices and manners that let you know he was in charge. Very reassuring if something went wrong. Stan continued in LBA ATC part-time for about another three years. I met him a few times - a gentleman.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
