So who else thinks that with the arrival of the 737 Max series to aviation and 320/321 Neos and LR's we maybe saw the end of regular wide bodied services at LBA with the demise of the PIA A310's?

I think a lot of people thought the B787 would lead to regional long haul but a slightly different picture is emerging. Norwegian are saying that they are to use their A321LR from Gatwick, not the regions. This will be on the "thinner routes".
The majority of "Long Haul Operators" from this country want to use LHR/LGW and MAN/BHX to a lesser extent.

They would struggle to land at Lba in bad weather so until that problem is addressed they would be crazy to start operating here other than in the summer months only.
Having said that we have had a pretty good winter so far with regards to diversions away for Lba.

Much as long haul ex LBA would be nice we need to get our European business network sorted first especially as the a/c needed would be more suited to LBA's runway length etc. Turkish should be a target in the medium term as they have the right equipment, a great product and a fabulous network through Istanbul

Qatar Airways are starting a route to Mykonos in May with an A320 which surprised but good on them to look beyond the traditional airports. Mykonos is a particulaly windy island in the Cyclades and lands can be ' interesting !!'

Unfortunately for LBA I would tend to agree with those that have said the MEB3 at LBA won't happen anytime soon, but I'm not so sure about Turkish.

They have over 150 A320NEO/B737MAX on order and will be moving to their new airport this year - to be the biggest airport in the world upon completion.

Maybe it won't happen in the next few years or even well into the 2020's, but personally I think LBA should be going after Turkish instead of the MEB3.

LBA is very similar to LPL. I could see one of these smaller long distance twins operating from Liverpool to New York, and why not to Istanbul or a Middle East hub. Whilst passenger are used to getting to the Med etc from Liverpool, it would be a learning curve for the public to realise that actually they don' t necessarily have to go to Manchester to go long haul and connect at one of the above hubs . I wouldn't think a smaller jet doing such a thing would affect their Manchester operations much.

Liverpool just suffers from being in Liverpool haha! Joking apart I agree leakage LPL to MAN is probably far greater than LBA to MAN. We should still embrace MAN as its good for the North but it may just become saturated a la Heathrow. The overflow then has to go somewhere!

Just give me thrice daily flag carrier connections to European hubs and I'd be happy enough as that opens plenty of options..

We've got Dublin and Amsterdam covered... Just need Madrid, Paris, Germany and Heathrow! Istanbul would be good too as mentioned above.

I'm not convinced we should go with that. We've been force fed this opinion by our city elders for far too long but Yorkshire is currently losing in the region of 3/4 of it's entire air needs to Manchester. #justsaying

I think we'll find larger aircraft and better use of the quieter times long before Manchester

Manchester is adding additional capacity so wouldn't hold out much hope there.

Expect more larger aircraft and better use of the quieter time in meantime.

Sorry accidentally pressed "post reply" too soon.
To some degree that will be true but not everyone will want to use off-peak times so where is the peak overflow going to go?

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
