I'm still convinced that LBA could sustain an American route that isn't served from MAN. Maybe not daily but certainly 2 or 3 times a week. I think I'm right that MAN has 2 x Newark, 1 x JFK, 1 x Chicago daily plus Las Vegas I think 2 or 3 x weekly. How about Boston from LBA? Would a B738 make it to Boston? Would certainly be more appealing than connecting flights in LHR, CDG or Frankfurt and there must be passengers from Yorkshire who travel over the hill to get these US flights.

Indeed - but won't happen until there is an improvement in the economy in the US and the UK. That was the airport view as of last month anyway.

Orlando is one of the long haul routes LBA should be able to pick up. Over 63,000 passengers flew from Manchester to airports in Orlando during August. How many of those passengers must have come from the Yorkshire region?

If airlines like Thomson's or Thomas Cook aren't willing or interested in operating to Orlando from LBA the airport should seek an operator that is.

Leeds Bradford International Airport plans to use the findings of a new survey, which reveals it has the wealthiest passengers outside London, to attract new airlines and long-haul destinations to Yorkshire.

The Civil Aviation Authority's Air Passenger Survey found that Leeds Bradford's business passengers have an average annual income of £69,000.

The airport was also found to have the wealthiest leisure passengers, with an average annual household income of £48,000 a year.

The survey, which questioned more than 200,000 departing air passengers about their travel patterns at 12 airports (seven outside London), also found that 86 per cent of the airport's passengers originate from within Yorkshire.

What is there to say about these figures.... :dunno:

I think it is quite interesting to see that Leeds has the wealthiest Leisure and Business passengers, but the airport could have easily used their common knowledge and gone out and said "Leeds is the biggest financial centre in England, outside of London..."

The figures that have been announced could, to some extent, have been speculated without the need for a study. I also don't know how this helps the airport in anyway, but enable Jet2 and other LBA airlines to up their fares a little....

On the link that has been provided however, it does state:

The survey also showed that Doncaster has highest proportion of leisure passengers (97 per cent) while Humberside has highest proportion of business passengers outside London.

It seems that it could be war between; LBA and EMA at this rate, as Humberside and Doncaster passengers will be choosing between the two.... In my eyes, EMA has a much larger Leisure offering than LBA. Business-wise there is not that much between them, apart from the newly introduced Frankfurt route by BMI and Berlin by Jet2 at EMA and LBA respectively...

This could be an interesting development as the following was posted by Knock Irealnd West airport on there facebook page last week.

Unfortunately, the Leeds flight didnt have sufficient demand to be sustained year round. We are working hard however to have it restored for summer 2012

I makes me wonder which airline they are talking to about restoring the Leeds to Knock route?
As looking at the ryanair based programme for the 3 aircraft there aren't that many gaps left in the scheduled to fill (2x Friday & 1x Sunday) and neither do they have based aircraft in Knock.
I wonder if Eastern Airways would be interested using the smaller Dash 8s on a summer basis or there again I how about Flybe, They operate into Knock from both Edinburgh and Manchester using Dash 8's which might be able to operate a w-leg into Leeds.

Sure did it to be opeeated by a Saab 2000 in BA colours with eastern airways crew in BA uniform, its a possibility too as the aircraft will only be doing two rotations to isle of man a day, with a third added at a later date, two daily LBA - LCY would fit in nicely with these flights

You can't get away from the fact restricted on-ward connections into "Business-Europe" are present, if you could even catch a connection through LCY that is...

Interesting to read the discussion that was happening when this thread was last updated. Amazing how much happens in 2 months.

With the recent inauguration of flights by OLT Express and a seemingly aggressive expansion plan, would it be in LBA's interests to try and establish a relationship with the airline? A reprisal of the Warsaw route, I'm sure, wouldn't go amiss. It could go on from there. I mention it as the airline seems to be avoiding going head to head with Ryanair and Wizz Air for the time being and Polish routes are reasonably undeveloped compared to the likes Manchester and Doncaster.

Yes it's amazing to see how much has changed in such a short time. I'm just hoping the airport can expand quick enough to facilitate future growth before the airlines get bored of waiting.

Looks like Tony Hallwood is on his travels next week trying to sell LBA to the Airlines at 18th World Route Development Forum which is been held in Abu Dhabi. Its seems that New routes on the airport’s ‘wish list’ include: Oslo, Madrid, Copenhagen and Warsaw.

I can see the airport making some movement on these destinations if all goes well. I think a Madrid route would defiantly be the hardest gap to get filled out of the 4 routes on the airports current wish list. Olso and Warsaw would be ideal ryanair routes while rumors suggest that Copenhagen could already be in the pipeline for next summer.

LBA promotes Yorkshire to Global Airline Chiefs

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) will be promoting Leeds and Yorkshire to the World at the 18th World Route Development Forum to be hosted in the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) capital of Abu Dhabi between 29 September and 2 October.

The Conference is an annual global meeting place for airlines, airports and tourism authorities. It is the largest gathering of its kind, allowing route development executives from airports worldwide to discuss and plan potential new air services.

Over 3,000 airline and airport delegates from across the world will meet in Abu Dhabi to discuss new route development opportunities.

New routes high on the airport’s ‘wish list’ include: Oslo, Madrid, Copenhagen and Warsaw.

Leeds Bradford Airport’s Commercial Director, Tony Hallwood, said: “This is an ideal platform to showcase the region’s business and leisure opportunities from Yorkshire’s gateway airport. Our aim is to encourage international airlines to introduce new services from Leeds Bradford Airport, extending the range of over 70 destinations that are currently available.

“Our discussions will focus on strengthening business connectivity and encouraging routes that could drive inward investment for the region’s businesses. In addition, we will be highlighting the inbound tourism opportunities that Yorkshire can offer the overseas visitor.”

I would agree with you lbaspotter. Oslo Torp (or Rigge) and Warsaw would be ideal Ryanair routes. I too have heard the rumours about Copenhagen.

Madrid is a difficult nut to crack. So many airlines have done it and pulled off it (including those from Manchester). I am not sure whether it would be better done by a loco or a full service operator.

I am guessing, whether rightly or wrongly, that we should now be getting good connections to Madrid with BA via LHR as they are all in One World Alliance.

Off subject now...Interesting to see the models that Tony has on his desk. I presume he realises that we do not get British Airways DH8/300's any more!!

I guess Oslo would end up being a low cost operations rather than someone like SAS. That in mind, wonder if Norwegian.no could do it?

Apologies if this has already been discussed had a quick look and couldn't find anything. LBA updated their routesonline page (19 April 2013) ahead of the Routes Europe Conference in Budapest with quite a few unserved key routes and underserved key routes added to the list, fingers crossed something good will come of it.

Well Aer Lingus regional are to make a big announcement at 0900 tomorrow morning, Wednesday, May 22nd regarding new routes and expansion for next summer.
I wonder if there long awaited return to LBA maybe on the cards as they said a while back that they would be interested in sereving both the Leeds and East Midlands markets in the future.

Alright dont hold me to this, But roumour has it that some new routes/services are/could be announced within the next few weeks...

All I would add is! "Watch this space"......
