I was looking at my old snooker trophies earlier and it suddenly occurred to me that this year marks 30 years since Dunkeswick. I was playing snooker that night when the news broke on the radio behind the bar. I remember going white with horror. At least I went on to win the Leeds City Handicap Trophy a week later. I hope someone formally remembers the disaster this May.

I was going out that night and left the house at tea time just as the Knightair Bandeirante (G-OEAA) took off on 14 in heavy rain and thunder. I watched it bank to the left as it turned North towards Aberdeen. Then I set off to my friends house on the A61 in Harewood. Ten minutes after arriving there, the first of dozens of police cars, fire engines, and ambulances started tearing past the house with blues and twos on. That went on for over an hour.

We later went out, not knowing the Bandeirante had crashed just 2 miles away while we were driving from Cookridge to Harewood. Personally, I only found out what happened next morning, but it was such a shock after watching it depart LBA literally 5 minutes before the accident. It was particularly shocking too because the husband of my work colleague worked for Knightair as an avionics engineer.

Its an event that's worthy of rememberance for sure. Very sad.
 
No more unlikely than a Cessna 152 overrunning the runway , going through the fence, down the embankment and overturning. Either way, whats certain is that it finished up upside down on the golf course.

I was just thinking I couldnt see the aero club letting a 152 out in high winds. Just taxiing would have been impractical.

Back in the mid 90s we had a quite a few airlines operating both bandeirante and jetstream props, we even had BA with J41s here at LBA!
It was British Airways Express using the same batch of J41s that Eastern operate(d). G-MAJA et seq.
I seem to recall the first Bandeirantes date back to the days of Air Anglia.
 
Yes think Air Anglia used to use the Bandeirante on the LGW-LBA service. Seem to recall nearly every flight I saw at the time seemed to be full

I think it was Air UK who first operated the Bandeirante. Air Anglia used a Navajo Chieftain on LGW.

I flew on that Knight Air plane that crashed not too long before it happened, Was so shocked when I found out it had crashed. Here are a couple of pics from the day I flew on it.View attachment 31812View attachment 31813

Nope, definitely Air Anglia had them before Air UK as G- BGYS was delivered to Air Anglia in the 70s. There are later photos of it still in Air Anglia livery but with an Air UK tail so, post January 1980 (the year Air UK was formed by the merger of Air Anglia with British Island Airways). Not sure how often the Bandit came into LBA but I definitely saw one or two here. Pretty sure we had a few diverts too.

Question. Were DAT Sabena the only airline we had that used Brasilias? Flew to Brussels on
I am not 100% sure, but I think TAT operated one for the Euros in June 1996.

Yes. We never had any other scheduled Brasilias other than DAT operating for Sabena.

TAT operated Fokker F28 Fellowship and ATR42 types to LBA for Euro 96.

I was thinking about them in relation to Leeds. I only remember seeing them in Air Uk livery at Leeds.

I found this timetable. Looks like they operated on LBA-LGW exclusively. Two flights per weekday.

Air UK was formed 1st Jan 1980

Wont allow me to upload more images. It was the front cover of the Winter 79/80 timetable with an F28, F27 and EMB all in Air Anglia livery.

I don't remember ever seeing one of their aircraft at LBA, but I do know that Viscount 724, G-BDRC, did visit us at least once in the 1970s. Colin Addison photographed it (along with umpteen other aircraft over the years) and I believe the picture still hangs in the airport Fire Station.

Intra had a few Viscount 810s as well, AVJB, BAPE and BAPG. Did any of these grace our concrete?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
