A risk of snow on Thursday according to the weather forecast or at least for the Northern half of the UK and again on Saturday but with less certainty.

Very strong winds with gusts of 55-65 mph, perhaps reaching 75 mph in exposed places, are looking increasingly likely on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Longer journey times by road, rail and air are likely, with restrictions on roads and bridges. There is also a chance of power cuts, and damage to trees and perhaps buildings.

It's not exactly been the nicest of summers.

In the South West the second half of May was warm, very warm at times, and dry, as were parts of June and the first ten days or so in July. In our part of the country things began to go really downhill as soon as the school holidays began towards the end of July.

No sign yet of an Indian summer with one front after another coming in off the Atlantic bringing rain, torrential at times, and strong winds (gales last night). Nothing in the immediate forecast that suggests anything is about to change although Tuesday is meant to be calmer and fairly dry down here, but the wind and rain return after that.

I'm hoping the winds aren't that strong as i'm home Wednesday, rain i can deal with but high winds are a pain when driving a lorry.

Hurricane Ophelia is tracking towards Ireland with winds expected to still gust to hurricane force as the storm downgrades to a post-tropical storm according to the US National Hurricane Center. The UK Met Office is saying the storm has potential to be a "high-impact event".

Latest guidance for Storm Ophelia from Met Eireann in conjunction with the National Hurricane Centre.Gale-force winds are expected to begin across southern parts by early Monday morning and gradually spread northwards across the country during the day. Hurricane-force winds are expected to reach southern coastal counties by late Monday morning with storm force winds spreading inland and northwards across the country during Monday.

Wind Warning for Wexford, Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford
Hurricane Ophelia is expected to transition to a post tropical storm as it approaches our shores on Monday bringing severe winds and stormy conditions . Mean wind speeds in excess of 80 km/h and gusts in excess of 130km/h are expected, potentially causing structural damage and disruption, with dangerous marine conditions due to high seas and potential flooding.

It's been a very odd colour around Bristol this morning, although in the last half hour it's getting brighter and a more normal colour.

From the photos I've seen it reminds me of Portland's sky when there was wildfires surrounding it.

They say it's due to sand from the Sahara and ash from the fires in Spain and Portugal

It's been a very odd colour around Bristol this morning, although in the last half hour it's getting brighter and a more normal colour.

Somewhat later here in the east of England. Around early afternoon, it started getting darker and the light quite visibly orange. This then lasted until early evening. It was overcast throughout this. Return to normal seemed to happen quite quickly.
I've read of several aircraft diverting or returning shortly after departure, due to reports of the smell of burning - possibly linked to the ash from the Spanish/Portuguese forest fires.

South West is expecting very strong winds on Saturday. Local rag has done a piece (by an appropriately-named journalist) on possible disruption at BRS although thus far nothing has been cancelled.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow warning for strong winds today for much of England and Wales.

Chief Forecaster's assessment
Gusts of 65 to 70 mph are expected along exposed coasts and over high ground such as the mountains of Wales, the Moors of SW England and the Pennines. Gusts of 50 mph are likely more widely. Winds will gradually ease from the west during the night, finally easing from the far SE of England around dawn on Thursday. Outbreaks of rain, some of it heavy, will accompany the strong winds and will add to the difficult driving conditions.
