I have some photographs that I took of one of the rarest ever visitors to LBA - an Air Hong Kong 747. I will happily post these on site if someone can guide me towards a section where such photos can be added!

Incidentally, the 747 on the left was the first Wardair 747 to visit the airport on 4th November 1984, taken from under the wing of British Airway 747 G-AWND, chartered by Yorkshire Post Newspapers, that I was about to board. The latter met a most unfortunate end, as it was captured by the Iraqis when they invaded Kuwait and was unceremoniously blown up some time later.

The first photo, looks strangely superimposed. The main gear doesn't look to be sitting on the runway and the nose gear looks to be on the grass. Also, there are no shadows. Hope I'm wrong!

[EDIT] - on zooming into it, it does look more natural.

It was doing ILS runs and overshoots on 32, which may explain the above. You obviously have a suspicious mind!

I was at my Mother-in Law’s house in Calverley and both these aircraft came low directly over us. A magnificent site of a truly iconic aircraft.

Did you include the photos, using the 'Attach files' or 'Insert image option''? the 'Insert image' option (and you can link to 3rd parties such as Flickr), should give a much larger image, similar to Flying Yorkshireman's B747 photos. However, you do need to be aware that the photos that you have posted may well be copyrighted.

Another one-off visitor. This TMA 707F diverted in from Heathrow, where the snow was worse than at LBA at the time. As I recall it came in from Beirut with a cargo of bananas. I think that this was in the mid 1980s.

Its because at the point where the photo is taken the 747 is crossing the old runway 28.

There was considerable doubt that the aircraft was going to be able to land, due to the strong cross winds that had developed on that afternoon. However, after a low approach and go round on 14, shown in the first picture, the captain made a rather bumpy landing on 32. The second picture shows the aircraft back-tracking 32 before departure on an unforgettable day for all who were there.

I was there. Lucky enough to be invited into the airport compound to the Western side of the apron . So many folk think the low approach and go around was an aborted landing. It wasn't!

I was too, only for me it was Plain Tree Hill with many hundreds of people. I had to organise all the signing for the police to put out for traffic control., and after that I had to walk up there after leaving the car at my office.

Plain Tree Hill was indeed packed with spectators that day, I think this may be the go around, but can't be sure?

The go around was from the other end, this will be the landing itself
