Exactly, i know there is more to it than just laying more concrete but through looking at birds eye views of the airfield there are 3 grassed areas that could be filled in, thats it! Haha

Where? What’s the prolixity to the runway and taxiways? What impact of these stands would it have on the ILS etc?

It’s all fine and dandy saying I can see grass areas to be filled in. But it’s so much more complicated then that.

But as WH has pointed out the new stands are in the plans for stage 3, so it must be possible.

The 3 grassed areas between the current apron and the old runway are no where near runway32/14. In fact the main terminal building is nearer to the runway than those grassed areas, so no effect on safety, ILS etc

That is not the fault of the airport. Blame slots for that.
Nothing to do with the slots. Blame the declared capacity by the airport and their coordination level as L2 (schedule facilitated). Carriers have the right at a L2 airport to refuse the slot time they are allocated. Unless of course you're referring to CTOTs causing knock on delays...

The most Westerly of these areas is partly inside the ILS protected area, so there could be an effect and certainly nothing would be able to manoeuvre there if CAT3 is to be retained. The DME equipment is just the other side of November taxiway, the DF equipment is not too much further. These too have protected areas. To state 'no effect on safety' is just too simplistic.

...The master plan will have been thought through with ATC.....
Hahaha, that's a good one!

The current Masterplan dates from 2017 and will be replaced in 2024. However, assuming there is no change relating to apron expansion (there aren't really many options to enable change anyway), the areas earmarked for new stands are as follows:

The two most Easterly grassed areas separating the current apron and taxiway (ex runway 10/28).

The Eastern end of the most Westerly grassed area is also included. The Western end is NOT included. The shape of the shaded area in the plan suggests that the airport are ensuring that the expansion doesn't impact on the ILS.

An area to the South of the taxiway (ex runway 10/28) is also included but is also clearly shaped to avoid any impact on the ILS.

An area to the Eastern side of the taxiway (ex runway 01/19).

Overall, there is a significant area shown but it won't necessarily all be developed. What is clear though is that after development, LBA will need to up their game in terms of bus availability as all the additional stands will require them.

My understanding, from discussions with the head of ATC at the time the Masterplan was written is that ATC were consulted and the plans within the Masterplan seem to confirm that.

I think I was trying to say (in a sarcastic manner, sorry) is that ATC are not necessarily the only people to consult. They are just controllers not experts in safe guarding or airfield layout. LBA do employ people with this skill set and use external consultants. The head of ATC in 2017 would have told anybody, anything he thought they wanted to hear!

Almost every flight Saturday afternoon had a CTOT, some quite significant. These have to be adhered to within -5 and +10 minutes.

Any more news on the terminal extension? Its getting close to September when the works are due to start and I assume the contractor must have been chosen by now.

Throughout the process, LBA have kept it low key and as far as possible, out of the spotlight, and I dont blame them with the airports enemies looking for any excuse to cause problems. I don't expect them to change that by announcing the successful contractor or the start date. It wouldn't surprise me if the first we know about it will be the contractors putting up screening around the site.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
