Jason, it was BAC Express who operated the Rapex sheds. Nor long before I worked at LBA there were up to three mail flights per night. One was a Jane's HS748. I can't remember who operated the third flight. Probably Streamline or Willow Air.

I found the schedule of post flights back in the early nineties :

2230 GX104L 360 to LGW
2230 RPX800 360 to EMA
2240 JAV168 748 to LPL

Did anybody ever manage to get a picture of the UPS 727 that used to come into LBA. It's funny how things stick in your memory but I can even recall the callsign as UPS 6571?

I saw it occasionally, although I'm aware that it visited every night. They were -100 series machines with replacement engines, i.e. not JT8DS. IIRC these aircraft flew on the Maersk AOC so used the 'White Star ' RT callsign. For a spell these flights were also operated by Blue Cargo 737-300s and Channel Express Electras.

I recently uploaded a very short, poor quality video of lba in the late 1970's. Feel free to watch.

Great stuff. Lovely to see Air Anglia and the BA Viscounts again. I can almost hear those Darts !

I believe i also have footage of the airport in the mid sixties, but am struggling to find a standard 8 projector to check.

Who remembers the distinctive sound of the F27 aircraft? When I was a young lad, I remember the aircraft's distinctive purr coming from the airport.

I was gutted when Air UK abandoned the dark navy blue and red colour scheme.

LBA received ELAL diversions on a regular basis back in those days. As Lbaspotter has said, largely because LBA was easier to secure than other larger airports. Snipers were placed on the airport roof to ensure the safety of passengers flying with the airline.

The El Al 767 was not a one off and several used LBA. The one in the photo was a MAN divert for the reasons already explained. LBA was their No 1 diversion airport.

Great picture Seasider, I can't believe you've been hiding that one from us for so long!

Corsair, the only airline to ever bring four variants of the 747 to LBA and I think it was the only airline to bring more than one 747 to LBA on the same day.

The 747-SP, 747-100, 747-200 and the 747-300.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
