I touched on this in the PIA thread, I thought it was only right that they got a mention here in the Nostalgia thread. What a fantastic airline this was, such a shame that they only lasted as long as they did. If I remember rightly, was that year the only year when Leeds has had two based/part based 767 aircraft on stand at the same time?

Some operators do have winglets installed on their 747-300s, quite easy to mistake them for 747-400s due to long upper-deck section.

I think you are right there Aviador - the other being the Britannia 767 presumably which for a couple of years was based here from May to July, until the 757 took over. How sad that the Germans took over and ruined things just as the airline seemed to be starting to take LBA more seriously.

Do you actually have the timetables LBAYORKIE? I ask because I still have a couple of BKS and Notheast timetables in a box in the loft (somewhere!). I would think they are quite valuable to a collector (not money wise, just in terms of memorabilia).

Yes I have quite a few. You are right, in that they are of real interest to someone who collects BKS/Northeast related items, but not worth collecting them for monetary gain though, simply because there are so few collectors, law of supply and demand applies of course, supply is greater than demand in this case! I really enjoy adding to my collection though. It's not just timetables I have various items of interest relating to LBA from the fifties onwards.
Would be nice to have somewhere to showcase them, but I think that there is no real interest form members of this forum.

It is always nice just to have a look at them from time to time. My BKS timetable dates back to the 60's and shows one of their Trident 1E tailplanes. The Northeast timetables were less interesting, although at the time the livery of Northeast was very unusual and a breath of fresh air for the UK where everything seemed to be blue and red in those days, with the exception of Northeast (Lemon tops) and their sister airline, Cambrian (orange tops).
I also have some postcards that a friend's Dad brought me home from Greece, of Olympic Airways Boeing 707 and 727-200 (the latter being my favourite aircraft of all time). At the time I never thought about the fact that both would become a rarity in the air. I also have a postcard of the 707 in its original Boeing prototype colours, and that must date back a good while since the 707 made its first flight in 1954 - shortly before I was born! I actually find it quite remarkable that in only 9 years, Boeing managed to go from producing the B29 to the 707, and it still looks good today!

Hi Guys, excellent nostalgic topic! The airport may have seemed more interesting back then but what was the actual volume of traffic like compared to now?
Which airport would you rather have, the 1986 version with the odd widebody or the 2010 version with plentiful(ish) scheduled flights?
Another question im hoping the brains on here can answer - i flew twice to Toronto (Pearson) to visit family back in the 1980's ( i was 5 and 7 years old!) and im certain we flew from LBA as i remember the drive up the A658. I know the flight stopped somewhere en route, presumably to add fuel, pick up pax whatever.... as im told, it was Exeter!? Is this true and what airline was it? Wardair? Airtours?
Id love to think i was there back in the wide-body 'hey-day' of the 1980's!

I think it could have been Nationair or Odyssey International? Both routed via Birmingham or Exeter, I believe Exeter was the home of the tour operator Globespan Holidays.

Not to forget Wardair who was the inaugural airline for the Toronto route.

I don't think Odyssey ever operated through Exeter.
They operated one season with B 757s from Bristol to Toronto Pearson before they went bust (I think in 1991 but am away from home and haven't got my stats with me).

I think Wardair operated every summer from LBA to Toronto from 1985 until the end of the 80's, and all but one of their flights in that time were on a 747 and usually operated via Birmingham outbound, and inbound direct. The one time they used a DC10 it operated direct from LBA non stop. The Nationair and Odyssey International 757's took over the route after Wardair ceased operations, although I am unsure what year that was exactly, or in which order they appeared.
The other operator that flew from LBA to Toronto for at least one summer season alongside the Wardair 747 around 1985 was Worldways Canada, using a L-1011 Tristar, although I cannot remember if this was direct or a split load or who they operated for, although I suspect it was Globespan., with Wardair at that time having their own brochures. I think it was likely that Globespan just picked up the route where Wardair left off, although I may be wrong given it is over 20 years ago now.
If I had to choose, I would certainly go for busy over interesting. However, I do miss the variety we had in the 1980's, and it was all the more interesting because we had a constant procession of aircraft types and airlines that had never been seen at LBA before the runway extension opened on 4th November 1984. The list of airlines and aircraft types I have seen at LBA is endless - it is a real nostalgia trip looking through my photo albums! Perhaps we should start a list of airlines and aircraft types that have visited LBA in the past - and a similar list for other airports?

Someone else may know, but I do not remember BCal ever operating from LBA other than in the form of Genair doing domestic flights in a Shorts 360 in BCal colours. However, that is just my memory and I can't always rely on it. I don't have any photos either of BCal at LBA. I only remember Wardair, Worldways Canada, Odyssey International, Nationair, and finally Air Transat and the usual date for the Toronto flights was Monday.

As far as I can remember, BCAL never operated to Toronto from LBA. If they did it was a "one-off" or a very short series.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
