I worked the full day at LBA on Saurday 15 June 1996 to oversee the aviation effects of the France v Spain Euro '96 match and, whilst I now suffer from a hazy memory, I do have detailed records for the LBA airliner operation.

The Air Outre Mer (AOM) DC-10 F-ODLX landed from Paris CDG as AOM7581 and parked on Runway 28 for the day. I don't recall any unservicability with this aircraft and it departed with the intended passenger load back to Paris CDG as AOM7582 later in the evening.

The biggest logistical problem occurred with a planned Corsair B747-200 return trip. The aircraft was delayed on maintenance at (I believe) Cardiff and was unavailable for the Saturday morning. This resulted in two aircraft bringing in the French supporters from Paris CDG, Corsair B747-SP F-GTOM as CRL888 and Aero Lloyd MD82 D-ALLT as CRL224. These departed empty as CRL081 to Paris Orly and CRL022 to Palma respectively.

The plan was always to bring in the B747-200 for the evening return but the aircraft suffered an additional technical problem and was unavailable. Three aircraft were required for the passenger rescue which extended into the very early hours of Sunday morning! Chalengair DC-10 OO-JOT positioned from Manchester as CRL082, then to Paris CDG as CRL889. Star Airlines Boeing 737-300 F-GRSA positioned from Nantes as CRL040, then to Paris CDG as CRL586. The third aircraft had to be extracted from the row of parked aircraft on Delta Taxiway that were intending to stay overnight. Air Jet BAe146 F-GLNI completed the passenger hoovering up and operated to Paris CDG as CRL824.

Hope this helps.

I was on the hill at the back of the now multiflight hangers (plaintree hill I believe its called?) it was quite a surprise to see a dc10 land late at night! im sure it was the airline oasis and not aero Lloyd unless my memory is bad?

We were under the ILS 32 end from around 7am, went home for tea then came back for the departures and the late landong concorde. There was also a Air Europa 767 due which didn’t materialise. Ive got video of all the action which needs to be converted to cd.

The photo from 'LBA Yorkie' of the three B737-200s in the snow nudged me to fish out my apron shot of the southern weather diversions which arrived on the evening of 10 December 1981.

They even got prime stands (as there were only six at the time!) with British Airways G-BGDO on 4 and G-BGDN on 3, and British Airtours G-BGJJ on 2.

A left over from LBA's busiest ever evening, with over 50 diversions due to all airports South and West of LBA being fogged in was this Swissair Airbus A310 HB-IPE. Being one of the last diverts in, and with the (then smaller) apron being full, it was forced to park up overnight on the runway 14/32 loop, with all passengers de-planed here and bussed to the airport. Rumour has it that the crew were not impressed at this decision, although the situation was almost unprecedented, with several aircraft landing at LBA that were just about running on fumes - in particular a Dan Air Boeing 727 200 that diverted from Gatwick. The photo was taken the next morning as the aircraft readied itself for departure.

Always a fairly rare visitor at LBA (probably as most were already going out of service) was the SUD Aviation Super Caravelle, this one being F-GCVL of Air Provence. I am fairly sure this was the first aircraft type in use to have rear mounted engines, preceding the likes of the BAC 1-11, DC9 etc. It was powered by Rolls Royce Avon engines too, as found in the DH Comet! I always thought that the nose of the aircraft was very similar to the Comet, but I have to say that in my view it was a very graceful and beautifully styled aircraft.

The Caravelle was essentially a twin-engine Comet. It used the same fuselage and nose section and the cockpit was identical, although configured for two, rather than four, engines. I think the later models dispensed with the Flight Engineer position and had JT9D engines.

Transavia used to operate Rotterdam bulb fields charters in the early to mid-1970s with Caravelles, along with the likes of Air Links, Alidair and Invicta.

Today's nostalgia photos are 3 of the Spanish airline, Hispania. who were becoming a frequent sight at LBA until it all came crashing down when they went bust in 1989, with two aircraft (1 x 737 300 & 1 x 757 200) impounded on the apron at LBA pending payment of outstanding landing fees. The 737 was then impounded by the leasing company who arranged for the tail fin to be re-sprayed white by a man on a cherry picker, on the LBA apron - a process I watched through binoculars from my bedroom window in Cookridge. To say I was gutted when they went bust was an understatement, as they were one of the first regular 757 operators into LBA and their livery was in my view, a breath of fresh air.

Todays photo is Air Holland Boeing 757 200 PH-AHF, seen at LBA around 1989 operating an ad hoc charter flight. Below is the same aircraft as we know her - Jet2's only mica/red 757 with winglets, G-LSAB, which seems to be perhaps the most popular 757 in the Jet2 fleet but will also be a thing of the past at LBA by next summer.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
