G-BFDS, ex PH-ARO. A model -400 leased from Fokker during 1977-78. I'm sure I remember this very aeroplane lining up on RW15 as a BA Viscount flew over the fence to land. I hope that isn't what happened !

I too used to stand opposite stand 3 but on the railings, rather than behind them.

I have an almost identical photo of her - same gate, same shooting spot, but still as PH-ARO. Poorer quality though :(

This is the antedote to all the fabulously colourful pictures posted in the last few days.
I have no idea of registration or airline, but I think it was taken in the late 70's. I was reminded of this photo when I saw where the preceeding ones were taken.View attachment 14713

Possibly the British Air Ferries Handley Page Herald that was damp leased by Air Anglia to operate the Amsterdam route in either 1976 or 1977. One registration from memory was G-BCWE.

Could be, there seems to be a B on the tail, but I dont remember the BAF livery looking like this. I think by this date they had adopted the multi coloured stripes running diagonally around front fuselage.

Just googled registration you gave me and found a colour picture of what seems to be this aicraft in a "shortlived" livery. Thanks.

Todays photo is an old one - Guernsey Airline Vickers Viscount 700 G-BDRC. No surprise, it was going to Guernsey. In the background can be seen the old RAF Vickers Varsity that back then was used as the Fire Practice area. At this time it must have been there for a fairly short time. I actually saw the Varsity makes its last ever landing - on runway 19, which of course meant it ended up there on the loop and didn't have far to go to where it spent the rest of its days. It remains the only larger aircraft I ever saw land on that runway (approaching from over Bramhope).

Nice photo of the Guernsey Airlines Viscount. I don't remember this company visiting LBA, except for a Shed needing a fuel uplift in the '80s.

Thanks for taking the time to dig this out, I think it confirms its definitely a BAF colour scheme.

I had a very nostalgic transport day yesterday...sadly not aircraft related. I had a 1954 BR 2MT steam engine, a 1958 BR Metro-Cammell 101 DMU, a 1961 Hudwell Clarke diesel shunter and a 1962 Leeds City Transport Daimler CVG6. Not much older than G-CELE!!

I remember whenever EL AL visited LBA, you couldn't get near the place if you didn't have a very legitimate reason for being there. Lots of armed police on the airport and its environs kind of rammed the point home !

As I recall, EL AL also brought us at least one 737 and one 707 when Manchester wasn't available but I don't think one of their 747s visited.

I recal muttering to myself I bet this will be the busiest I ever see LBA for actual scheduled traffic, still true to this day.
How many passengers in total were carried in and out of LBA on this football 'airlift'.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
