This eBay item is well worth a look for anyone interested in the airports history. I would love to add this to my collection but the asking price of £149.95 is unrealistic.

Fantastic video, very well put together. I have programme for the 1959 Air Pageant. I dont see a mention of the Red Arrows though.

It was suggested by another poster of this video (elsewhere) that the Red Arrows were filmed somewhere else, not at Yeadon. Not sure if they were about as early as 1959 or using the Foland Knat aircraft? Someone will know. I was at that airshow but it's a very vague memory as I was only just 5.

The Red Arrows were not formed until 1964 with Foland Gnats at Little Rissington in Gloucestershire primarily from the Red Pelicans who flew Jet Provists and the Yellow Jacks who flew Gnats.

This was pretty much the final consolidation by the RAF as previously they had quite a few display teams including The Black Arrows with Hunters and also The Tigers who flew English Electric Lightnings and famously performed a nine aircraft wing roll over in close formation.

Info from memory and Wikipedia.

Anyone recall an incident probably around the mid-70's when an Aer Turas DC-4 (probably EI-ARS) blew some/all tyres on landing at LBA, then spent quite some time parked on 'the Pan' before it was eventually repaired and flew off?

I was there on this particular day. It was DC4 EI-ARS carrying around six race horses and grooms from either Dublin or Shannon. Most likely in 1976 or the year after. The aircraft landed on Runway 15 (now 14) bursting most main gear tyres and minimal retardation thereafter. It ended up in the grass by the golf course fence, abeam the Pan and Runway 33 intersection. All on board were unhurt.

Hope this helps.

Wonderful - thanks for confirming the reg. I was just a small kid in those days, pre-spotter era :)
That particular DC-4 is preserved in Germany now I believe.

Is exactly the same argument every time.

Does anybody have the Wharfe Valley Times snippet from the 90s that shows a new terminal around stand 11-12 area? I think it read something like "£15m new terminal to form part of the airports proposals".

Hello all, this incident must of occurred after. September 1976, as it happened after I stopped working at LBA. Hope this helpS.

Just leave this here. GALBA bait. It's a film made to promote LBA not long after 24 hour flying was approved, so must be around 1994. The guy speaking is Bill Savage, Deputy Director of the airport.

Hello all, I am a new boy on here. I never knew this site existed until recently. It has brought back a number of memories:

My first flight was LBA-IOM in about 1962 with Silver City in a Bristol 170. This was followed either the following year or the year after by my parents taking me to PMI...... via LHR on a BKS HS748 for the first sector and a British Eagle Britannia on the second leg. On the way home I was lucky enough to visit the flight deck somewhere over France which I think shaped my life for ever.

From earlier posts I particularly remember the SATA Caravelle which visited in September 1974. I was working at LBA then, and whilst the aircraft was on layover at the old apron me and someone went on board for a look-see and sitdown on the flight deck. We had to wind the ventral stair down to get on board. What fun and great times.

Welcome Gazza. I hope you enjoy the forum.

My first flight was LBA to IOM in a Silver City Bristol 170 about 1960. Return was diverted to Blackpool, fog at Leeds.

My first flight was LBA to IOM in 1959 or 1960 in a Silver City DC3. The following year again LBA to IOM but this time on a Sliver City Bristol 170.

Way too long ago for me those flights. 1978 for me to LHR on a BA Vickers Viscount.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
