Re: Nostalgia Thread

I went on an 'old' Corsair caravelle on a charter from LBA to CGN, probably in late seventies. No thrust reversers, only brake chute.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I watched you land at LBA - the only time I have ever seen a Caravelle at LBA and certainly the only time I have seen brake chutes.

Over the years, we have had some very interesting visitors, many of which I have photos of. In recent years, the airport is much busier, but much less interesting, given the lack of variety and very few charters.Even those we have are mostly carried out by our own Jet2.

If we made a list of airlines and aircraft types visiting LBA over the years, it would be a long list. So would the list of airlines visiting that no longer exist.

Going back to my earlier days, how many remember BKS (later British Air Services, Northeast and then British Airways). I still remember their DC3's, then the arrival of their brand new HS748's and eventually Viscount 700's (two of which were broken up at LBA) and 800's. Shame we didn't have the runway for their Trident 1C's and Britannia's. They also flew a few Elizabethan's which turned up at LBA quite frequently. I had an uncle working for BKS at the time and managed to get on board Viscount 800 G-AOYR in the hanger - always noticeable as it was the only one in the fleet without a black nose radome. The others were G-AOYO, G-AOYL, G-AOYH, G-APEX and G-APEY. Most were based at LBA for the most part, and it was common to hear their 4 Dart engines whining away in the hangar at night whilst undergoing maintenance (and, nobody complained!).

I also remember British Island Airways Handley Page Heralds, Autair Heralds, Aer Lingus DC3, Viscounts and F27's, Guernsey Airlines Viscount 700's, Dan Air HS748's, and Channel Express 'Scottish Flyer' Viscounts. They were great days and I think myself very lucky having seen all these aircraft and airlines over the years, whilst growing up around the airport.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I remember the BKS HS748's and flew on one from Heathrow to LBA but was diverted to MAN due to cross winds, annoying as home was Guiseley, but also recall my excitement at a day trip to Heathrow for £6 return, (you had to be under 16 to qualify). On the day of the flight it turned out to be a Viscount 800 of BKS. The year was probably about 1960. Back in Guiseley I remember watching the DC3's going over as a youngster and this began to fire my interest in aviation.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Hi rmac

If you flew on a Viscount, it must have been at least the late 60's (not 1960), as BKS only took delivery of their first Viscount, which was a 700 (G-ATTA, later broken up at LBA in 1970) on 19th April 1966, the year after Runway 15/33 was opened. The first 800 to arrive was G-APEY on 2nd April 1968, with the last of 6 arriving on 30th March 1970 G-APEX). Incidentally, BKS were the first airline to operate the HS748, when they took delivery of G-ARRW on 23rd April 1963.

Information on the history of BKS and the entire fleet it operated is availble on the 'History of BKS' web site, which makes an interesting read, given that they were the airline that put LBA on the map.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I didn't realise that there were as many people as old as me on the forum!

Re: Nostalgia Thread

BKS Viscount: I believe the Viscount was on lease for a short spell, possibly BEA. I had left Yorkshire before 1966 so maybe the year was 1961/2 and the fare was £3 return for "young" travellers, which is why my brother and I went for the day, and this is where I got the £6 from but that was for the two of us. It was a great day looking round Heathrow, the first time I had been there. The flight back was early evening.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

That might be the case rmac. BKS certainly did lease a BEA Viscount . There are photos of it on the LBA 80 yrs history section of their website and it is stated to be 1964, although there are a few errors on that as we all know so it might have been 1965. As far as I know, BKS didn't use an Viscounts on scheduled services until after runway 15/33 opened in 1965, but they may well have chartered the BEA one pending delivery of their own or for flights such as yours before the new runway opened.

Anyway, if you flew on it, you might be interested to see the photo of it on the apron, along with a few other early 60's visitors.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Great find mode1.

It just goes to show how big the construction project was, even by today's standards.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Does anyone know if an Airtours/MyTravel A330 ever visited LBA around between 2000 and 2003, possibly 2001/2??

I seem to remember being on the playing fields as a young boy in Baildon and I am sure it was an A330, possibly Airtours or MyTravel departing 14 and heading in a westerly direction?! - Could have been heading back to MAN after a charter or aircraft change?

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I don't have any details of the aircraft reg but I do recall seeing a MyTravel A330 at LBA. I believe they made more than one visit over a couple of years when the 757 was tech (G-PIDS)

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I never saw the A330, but Airtours did use a DC10 from time to time too, and I saw that on a number of occasions in lieu of the normal based aircraft at the time. Always a great aircraft to see at LBA.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Ken Cothliff is at Yeadon Morrison's today signing copies of his book if anybody is interested.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

The A330 in question was a Skyservice aircraft. It operated through LBA about ten years ago for a brief period, probably less than a week, when the regular Airtours A320 wasn't available. Took up about three stands as it parked facing west !

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Come to think of it, I'm sure I've seem MyTravel A330 since then as well.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Does anyone have any photo's of a MyTravel/SkyService A330 at LBA, or even a MyTravel DC-10??

I'm sure the latter would have been a sight not to be forgotten for a long, long time!

Now they're pretty much consigned to the history books I thought I'd dig out an old picture of BMI at LBA.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I'm not sure if it's already been mentioned but there was an Air Luxor A330-300 that came into Leeds years ago. I think it was a one off though. When was the last time we had a A330 arrive at Leeds? It would be nice to see a regular A330 coming into Leeds, but which airline would operate with it.

The last Airbus A330 into LBA was a Thomas Cook Airlines example operating a cruise charter out to Bridgetown Barbados in 2009 i think was. In the same year we also had a Monarch Airlines Airbus A330 into LBA operating a MOD to Germany if i remeber correctly.

There is a picture of the Monarch Airlines A330, G-SMAN landing on 14 positioning in from Manchester. It was taken by Andy Bowden in the Control Tower. http://www.lbaspotters.net/monarcha330gsman2.htm

Regarding the Air Luxor Airbus A330's you mentioned LUFC Jonno. I seem to remember it visited LBA a few times early on a Sunday mornings back in either 2002 or 2003 operating for Planetair in lieu of the planned Airbus A320's from Faro. The only other A330's I can remember would have been the Aer Lingus and My Travel/Airtours aircraft that visited on charters...

Hope that helps

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
