Re: Nostalgia Thread

Thanks lbaspotter for the info and the picture. I remember seeing the Thomas Cook and Monarch A330's from my house. Hard to believe that 2 years have passed that quickly.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I seem to remember the Air Luxor A330 visited in the early Summer of 2003, it could have been May/June and it was a replacement for the A321 which operated to Portugal I think every Sunday.

I do believe Air Luxor is no more and the airline has rebranded to 'Hi Fly' due to financial difficulties.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Its happened to a few airlines that have operated from LBA on a regular basis. Can name a few that have been rebranded or gone bankrupt like Iberworld (Orbest), Airtours/MyTravel (Thomas Cook), Britannia (Thomson), Spanair, Astraeus, Sabena, Wardair, British European (Flybe), and Air Southwest stand out. I would like to know who else operated from Leeds and are not longer operational as I fear I may have missed out some airlines

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Swefly was it that(?) that first started operations to Pakistan via Sweden.

Air Europe, Air Atlantique, Air Afrique, Air Atlanta, British Airtours, Dan Air, Air UK.

I think that's all I can recall...

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Yeah Swefly did the Lahore via Stockholm route with a B762. Did XL does regular flights from LBA or were they one offs?

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Don't forget Hispania, Aviaco, Spantax, JAT, Adria, Aviogenex,Worldways Canada,Oddessey, Eurocity Express, Orion, Air UK Leisure, Brymon, British Airtours, Genair, Air 2000, Brown Air, Capital, Knightair, Gill Air and the ones who flew for Aspro from LBA with a based 737-300 - sorry their name escapes me - all regulars from Leeds.

Ironically there was huge variety of airlines and airliners when we had just a fraction of the passenger numbers and routes we enjoy today

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Air Anglia, Metropolitan, Yorkshire European A/W, ATS Vulcan, Nortjet, Severn A/W, BIA, Sunjet. Can't think of any more off the top of my head.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Britannia as well, and I do believe JMCAir were seen on the odd occasion!

I used to love the JMCAir Livery, even though many people thought it wasn't nice..!

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I liked the JMC and also the MyTravel livery. I believe their livery on the A320's and A330's made them look brilliant.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

The Aspro airline was Inter European. There was also Balkan Bulgarian, Air VIA, Aeromaritime (which operated an entire season of charters after Air Europe went bust I believe), and going back further, there was BKS, Silver City, Channel Airways, Guernsey Airlines, Northeast, British United Island Airways, Braathens SAFE (Norway), Autair, Manx. More recently there was the Spanish airline whose A320 suffered brake problems and ran off the side of the runway around 5 years back. I can't remember their name despite flying with them once from TFS to MAN.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Thanks Jonno, yes it was LTE International and the Jordanian registered A320 was in all white livery I recall.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I may be incorrect but didn't the pilot fail to land in the required landing zone and used the grass to avoid overshooting the runway? Apologies if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure if it's already been mentioned but there was an Air Luxor A330-300 that came into Leeds years ago. I think it was a one off though. When was the last time we had a A330 arrive at Leeds? It would be nice to see a regular A330 coming into Leeds, but which airline would operate with it.

The last Airbus A330 into LBA was a Thomas Cook Airlines example operating a cruise charter out to Bridgetown Barbados in 2009 i think was. In the same year we also had a Monarch Airlines Airbus A330 into LBA operating a MOD to Germany if i remeber correctly.

There is a picture of the Monarch Airlines A330, G-SMAN landing on 14 positioning in from Manchester. It was taken by Andy Bowden in the Control Tower. http://www.lbaspotters.net/monarcha330gsman2.htm

Regarding the Air Luxor Airbus A330's you mentioned LUFC Jonno. I seem to remember it visited LBA a few times early on a Sunday mornings back in either 2002 or 2003 operating for Planetair in lieu of the planned Airbus A320's from Faro. The only other A330's I can remember would have been the Aer Lingus and My Travel/Airtours aircraft that visited on charters...

Hope that helps

Re: Nostalgia Thread

and of course we had Monarch's B767 G-DIMB as Aviador's image shows, which they took from MyTravel on lease I believe before becoming G-TCCB with Thomas Cook.

I too liked MyTravel's livery. It gave something different and it worked well the Blue and Orange, which you wouldn't normally expect!

Yes LTE, they're a blast from the past! They used to be regular didn't they. I remember at one point we had;

LTE International
Air Europa (X2 weekly)
Iberworld
Spanair
& Futura

Futura International is the one I forgot to mention earlier. It's a shame all of them are all but distant memories!

Re: Nostalgia Thread

My mistake eastcoast. Aviador, didn't Monarch once operate a charter using a B763 to Bridgetown via Manchester?

Re: Nostalgia Thread

A great thread, possibly because all the wow-factor stuff seems to be a thing of the past.
Although much busier and slowly expanding, I do worry that our airport is becoming a two-carrier operation.

Worldways L10-11 / Toronto 80s
Iberia A300 / Palma / 80s
Aviogenex / Various / Yugoslavia
Inter- European / 737 / A320/ Base before Airtours aquired them ( very short term )

Some great divs and rugby charters too..

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Thanks for that vid ex_crew, I think i've seen it before, but it was good to see again!

It's such a shame that this spotting area is restricted even more slightly by the Mutliflight Hanger..!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
