I flew on the 'Amy Johnson' named Britannia 737-200 in the early eighties! Think I will have to raid my mums photo albums for some aircraft photos!

As promised my mum called with a few pics she has found kicking about, which I took in the 80s!

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Nice to see the Wardair DC10 'The Pole' - it only came once and you (and I) were obviously there to see it. It was also unique as it was the only Wardair flight ever to fly to Toronto non stop as far as I am aware. The 747; usually came in direct, but flew outbound via BHX.

I really am going to have to try and scan my photos and find out how to post them on here, as I probably have about 150 including some that I think have never been posted on here before. Inteflug IL18 & Tu134, Aeroflot Tu154, Air Holland B727 -200, and loads of others. I am gonna have to get up in that loft though to find them all, and there's spiders up there!!!! :shok:

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Heather, the first ever Wardair flight to Toronto was also non stop. This photo makes you realise how big the DC10 is. Unfortunately I mist it so I was gutted when I found out it had visited.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Have you got the edition that talks about the runway capabilities?

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Aviador, I have 3 editions so I will check it out. The first Wardair went direct to Toronto with a full passsenger load and 4 tons of freight!

Re: Leeds Bradford - General Thread

According to Open Maps there are three reservoirs at the Horsforth end of the runway, but I've never seen these, and they don't appear on Google satellite images, are they underground? Does anyone know?

This is aerial view of Yeadon Aerodrome looking north-west, taken in 1950s, The hangars and terminal building are just above the runways in the centre, while above them is the hugh AVRO factory. At the bottom of the picture you can see that the golf course surrounded one of the smaller reservoirs, while the edge of a larger reservoir can be seen on the bottom right hand corner which is where the end of runway 32/14 is nowa days.

Hope that helps.

Re: Leeds Bradford - General Thread

So there were reservoirs, but they don't seem to be there now. I know the land just outside of the Horsforth end of the runway is owned by Yorkshire Water, but it would seem that Open Maps is wrong, because as far as I can tell the reservoirs have gone.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I think they were emptied in the 70's or early 80's but the craters (if you can them it that) are still there.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I can confirm that there were 2 reservoirs, originally under the control of the long defunct Rombalds Water Board, and (I believe due to leakage issues) they were drained some years ago. I was a member of Horsforth Golf Club at thet time and there was one running alongside the 4th hole (which regularly claimed my ball) and one very deep one directly at the end of runway 32. This one extended towards the West and ran alongside the 16th hole, which dog legged around it. Both reservoirs were still there in the late 70's and I think they may have still been there in 1984 on the day the runway was extended, but they were certainly drained not too long afterwards. It totally spoiled the area visually, although it was a lot cheaper in golf balls. It also helped with airport closures as the presence of the reservoirs exacerbated our LBA fog problem! The deep one at the end of the runway was eventually turned into a nature reserve and planed with trees and shrubs, which are now very thick.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Closing the reservoirs was good news for the airport, up until then they were very restricted as to what they could put on the runway to de-ice in winter. Apparently the surface water ran off the airport into these impoundments.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

The deep reservoir at the 32 end was still there in 1983, as I spent a glorious summer evening sat on the banks with a 9 foot Woolworth fibreglass fishing rod & a few maggots. The resulting 9 brown trout were well worth the risk of getting caught, and the added bonus of being right under the 32 approach gave me a cracking view of the F27's & Viscounts that seemed to be dominant at the airport at that time!

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I have been threatening for a while to find my old photos from LBA, scan them and post them for anyone who is interested to see. I have finally braved the spiders in the loft and scanned around 150 photos today, which I will be posting on the Nostalgia section of the Photograph Gallery. I have posted around 23 today, and will continue to post others over the next few days until your'e all bored to death with them! Sorry if they are bit grainy, but some are rather old, and all are just scanned from photos, but there are a few nice ones I think. Not sure how to post the better ones on the LBA nostalgia thread, although I would like to do so with a few of them that a really nice.

Anyway, I hope that the photos bring back a few happy memories and act as a reminder as to how exciting the times were at LBA in the 80's and 90's.

FANTASTIC!!!!!!! :hatsoff:

Those were the days. I bet half the people on here can't believe these sort of aircraft used to be regulars into LBA.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
