48 Vanman, you are quite correct, Worldways did operate Tristars into LBA for one season I believe, and I am pretty sure i have posted a photo of one within the Nostalgia photos section. I seem to recall that on one occasion at least they also operated a DC8 61, which I would have loved to see, but I was at work and never saw a DC8 at LBA even when other airlines flew them in occasionally.

Nationair did operate from LBA using a 757 and likewise Odyssey International. Again I am fairly sure I posted photos of both. Quebecair did not fly into LBA regularly and to my knowledge have never visited LBA, although I stand to be corrected.

Many thanks, Ray. I haven't seen them before. They bring back memories of a lot of airlines and aircraft seen in years gone by and not just at LBA, an airport I regret to say I've yet to visit.

I Don't think this video has ever been posted here before, it's by Maurice Wray of the Aireborough Historical Society.

Although the footage is short it shows what I think is a BKS taking off on runway 33 prior to the runway extension with the chequer boards and the A658 passing close to the end of the runway. Also in the footage is the old hangers which were located around the stand 8-10 area.

Great stuff! Those car parking charges would go down well today although with inflation they probably aren't a lot different.

White Heather , you never fail to amaze me , I couldn't agree with your previous post more. The airport was volumes more interesting in the 80s than now , OK so we have more traffic but the variety provided by a few carriers was far more entertaining.

We valued each landing much , much more as enthusiasts , knowing days before hand when a special visitor was going to arrive.

One of my favourites was Iberia A300 from Palma , late Sunday afternoon, fantastic.....and of course the Canadian big fellas , awesome.

Lets be fair though , its not all at the hands of LBA , there are of course far less charter airlines around , Hispania , Aviaco , Inter-European , etc are all memories.

So true. Spotters would quite happily sit around on the bench at the end of the runway or in front of the golf shelter near the 32 touchdown area for hours on end waiting for maybe one or two special arrivals. These days those special arrivals only happen once a month at most. How times have changed. Imagine the good old days and add the likes of Monarch, Jet2, British Airways and Ryanair and I would be very satisfied. Well, almost.

Thank you for that , " fly the big jets " , god thats going back.

Sunday afternoons were great , couple of Russian machines , this Iberia , and a few others.

But we also got attached to them whilst on the ground , fascinated by every move , getting glimpses of the crew , passengers walking across the tarmac....and then it got really emotional......PUSHBACK , watching them painfully crawl towards the threshold , then they were gone with a slight whiff ( Im not crying by the way ) of kerosene and a faint black trail , we would keep our eye on that jewel until it was a mere " dot".....farewell my friend ( which we thought they were )....until next week , same time , same place.

I have a copy of said advert, but when I try to upload it states the board attachment quota has been reached.
Any Ideas out there?

Hi, I'm new to forums so forgive me if I've put this in wrong place or butted in.
I came accross a photo of the construction of Leeds Bradford runway extension and I'm looking for any pictures of the plant that was used by dowsett construction.
My dad used to work for them and I'm hoping to find photos of the plant he worked on, the site or people he worked with. Any info would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

I don't like to point people away from our forum but have you tried the Aireborough Historical Society? They have a Facebook page if you want to check it out. I think you'll probably need to be logged in to see it.

Add the JAT B707 to the Sunday afternoon list too! :good: I remember those years well, even though I was only about 10 years old at the time.

Very true, there seemed far more diversity of aircraft sizes and types around at that time. Many of the more interesting charter movements operated just once weekly, which made their visits feel like even more of an event and something to watch out for. More regular visitors, such as Dan Air 1-11's and BMA DC-9's were also still noteworthy, aircraft with lots of character and noise which got your attention!

That was sadly before I started spotting planes so I don't ever remember Dan Airs or even Capital for that matter. What I do remember is many a Sunday afternoon staring at a couple of Short 360's (Air UK G-DASI was always one of them) and that was about it until a BMI DC9 or the odd F27 turned up. Yes, the odd Eastern European charter was the highlight of the day. Nowadays you can leave the Square Monkey cafe at 4pm and look down the ramp and see anything up to 12 jets lined up.

I disgaree to some extent about the variety. We get Jet2, Eastern, FlyBe, Monarch, Thomsonfly, Stobbart Air, Loganair, KLM, SAS (not for much longer), Ryanair, BA, Austrian Arrows and Easyjet through the year. Then over the last year we have had Corendon Dutch, Enter Air, Denim Air, Linxair, Titan, Cityjet, HOP, Mistral, plus many more I have probably forgotten about. I don't think we do too bad these days!!

Nah! It was much better in the good old days when we had daily or weekly flights by airlines such as Air UK, Logan Air, Sebena, British Midland, Manx Airlines, Aviogenex, Dan Air, Air Europa, Spantax, Air Europe, Air UK Leisure, Wardair Canada the list is endless. In contrast, today you don't just have to wait all day to see something different, you might have to wait months to see the likes of Corendon Dutch, Enter Air, Denim Air, Linxair, Titan, Cityjet, HOP, or Mistral you mention. The only thing that is noticeably better these days is the number of business jets. Of course it is nice to see the apron nearly always full these days but once you've seen a Jet2 or a Ryanair you've seen them all.

This thread brings back memories for me as I used to work with Trevor Kinghorn and he used to edit a local magazine with all the LBA movements in. Proof reading the mag for him amny years ago awakened my interest in aircraft. We used to nip of to the leeds tower on a lunch time to check all the listings and get alol the latest movement information, happy days. bet we would struggle to get in the tower today.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
