We do have a reasonable variety of aircraft types today Bigman , your right. I think because the majority of these are daily visitors it affects " the wow factor "
I like the way you explained it too Avaidor , the noise and fumes were an integral part of the excitement , of course todays jets are much quieter , again disturbing the thrill we got in the past.

The majority were foreign charters , again making the day out that bit more special , today we have very few , putting those aside we still seem to lack non holiday charters, like we use to do. Im thinking about special MOD flights and rare visitors like the UAE 747 SP.

Even diverting aircraft in the past seemed bigger and noisier !!

Back in the day when Leeds United were a true football team and always in European championship games is when we had some of the truly great charters. looks like it will be a long time before Leeds United will be in playing in Europe again!

Balkan and Air Via Tupolev's on Saturdays and Sundays were my favourite a/c to see at LBA!

The euro 96 football championship also brought a number of a/c in. Is there anybody who has photos of the Iberia 727's parked in the pan? I cannot remember how many there were that day?

Just to add my "twopenny worth".
Viva, Oasis, Nortjet, Hispania, Spantax, Lineas Aeras Canaries, LTE - all Spanish Charter Airlines.

LBA787, I don't have pics of the Iberia 727s in the pan - I don't even remember them being there and I was there all day that day - but I have posted pics of the Iberia 727s, and 757 and various others, all from Euro 96, in the Nostalgia photos if you want to have a look.

Here's a blast from the past. Several tails of airlines that use to use LBA back in the late 80's and early 90's

My first posting, so in with 'all guns blazing'.

Who is old enough to remember Friday 31st January 1992 ? Fog affected the north of England in the afternoon, and later that night most of the south of England !

We had 51 (yes fifty one) inbound diversions of air transport movement sized aircraft throughout the day. These included visits by four national flag carriers, Aer Lingus, British Airways, KLM, and Scandinavian Airlines, the latter producing a first type visit of an MD87.

The first ten of the day were ....
G-AVMT BAC111-500 Birmingham to Manchester (BAW-MT), departed to Dusseldorf (BAW5134).
G-OLCC BAeATP Guernsey to Manchester (LOG961A), night stop, departed to Manchester (LOG001P).
XV197 C130 Akrotiri to Manchester (RRR5943), night stop 02Feb, departed to Lyneham (RRR5943).
XV222 C130 Akrotiri to Manchester (RRR5945), night stop 02Feb, departed to Lyneham (RRR5945).
G-BCXR BAC111-500 Gatwick to Manchester (DAN180), departed to Gatwick (DAN181).
G-WMCC Jetstream31 Cork to Birmingham (BEA504A), night stop, departed to Birmingham (BEA-CC).
EI-CDE, B737-500, Dublin to Manchester (EIN516), departed to Paris Charles de Gaulle (EIN516).
G-AVMH, BAC111-500, Amsterdam to Manchester (BAW5027), departed to Frankfurt (BAW5152).

G-OATP BAeATP Belfast City to Liverpool (MNX1516), departed to Belfast City (MNX553).

I will gladly post the remainder in batches of ten should there be interest out there ?

Your feedback is most welcome, regards Barnsley Holidays.

Welcome to Forums4airports BarnsleyHolidays !! I remember two big diversion days and I'm not sure which one of the two this was. Was it the day when the airport received aircraft out of hours into the night after the fog closed just about every airport in the country? Towards the end of the evening the fog started to encroach the Horsforth end on the runway here at Leeds Bradford.

We've discussed the big diversion days before and I don't think we've ever manage to piece together everything that came in so your listing is much appreciated!

Re: Weather & Technical Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

And don't forget Swiss Air being parked on the loop. Either G-OSUN or G-OSKI of Capital arriving on delivery. What a night that was.

Two other busy diversion nights come to mind. One was early 1987 (some time between January and March), the other December 1990. The first brought virtually the whole British Airways Manchester fleet of 1-1 510s to LBA, the second I think brought more variety and an extension of hours to around 1.30 a.m. I remember the second because it was also the night of my office Xmas party and also because an Air Malta crew was anxious to get airborne. ATC wasn't budging one second after closing time !

Thanks ever so much BarnsleyHolidays! It's hard to imagine the airport receiving so many diverts.

25 night stopping before we have had all the new standing areas built since this time. How many could we cope with today?
Great list thanks for the info

Re: Aviationy Nostalgia Threaig d

BarnsleyHolidays, thank you for your lists. I am, regretfully, old enough to remember all the biggest LBA diversion days. The biggest ever was due to LBA being just about the only airport South of Newcastle that was not fog bound. The diverts started coming late afternoon and continued through to around midnight. I spent the entire evening at the airport. Bearing in mind LBA was still relatively quiet in those days, it was quite something to see as many as 5 aircraft's landing lights on approach and others circling in the hold above, waiting for their turn. I am not sure if it is the same event you are listing but if it is, you haven't listed the Swissair A310 that came in that day and (as previously mentioned) ended up parked on the 14 loop all night. Passengers were bussed from there to the terminal. There was also a very late Dan Air Boeing 727 divert from LGW, which was verging on an emergency due to lack of fuel. I remember that well because LACAN (the outspoken anti aircraft group who were on the Consultative Committee with myself at that time) later objected to it landing after hours, despite its fuel emergency and suggested that it should have been sent up to Newcastle or Glasgow - and if it didn't make it, well tough. The number of diverts that night was in the 50's. The following morning LBA was covered in shallow fog. You could stand on Plane Tree Hill and watch tail fins moving around the airfield but the fuselages were hidden in the fog. It was am amazing sight. I managed to get a photo of the Swissair A310 which was still on the loop when I arrived, and before the shallow fog arrived, and that is in the Nostalgia photo thread.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
