Being reminded of the Tristar "incident", I recall that it is 40 years yesterday (May 28), that Leeds United played in the European Cup Final in Paris. Prior to Euro '96, this was the busiest day for passengers at LBA. We had to fly EMA - LBG on an Invicta Vanguard, I don't think the LBA runway was long enough for the Vanguard in those days.

I am really showing my age tonight!

[offtopic]Here is another old one showing his age. An Invicta Vanguard was on a day trip from Bristol to Basle in April 1973 carrying mainly women for a shopping expedition when it crashed on approach to Basle Airport. 108 people lost their lives. The competency of the flight crew was thought to be a contributory factor.

In several village churchyards near BRS there are rows of graves of mainly women all bearing the same date of death. They are extremely poignant.

"Pilot Anthony Dorman became disoriented, misidentifying two radio beacons and missing another. When co-pilot Ivor Terry took over, his final approach was based on the wrong beacon and the aircraft crashed into the hillside. Dorman had previously been suspended from the Royal Canadian Air Force for lack of ability, and had failed his United Kingdom instrument flying rating eight times. As a result of the crash tougher regulations were introduced in the UK".
Unfortunately, it seems to take a crash for many common-sense rules to be put in place.

"Despite the conclusions of the official Swiss report, one commentator, ex-KLM pilot Jan Bartelski, has argued that the pilots may not have been entirely to blame and there is a possibility that they were led off course by "ghost" beacon transmissions caused by electric power lines."

Just to get you scratching your heads, when did LTE A320 JY-JAR, slip off the edge of 14 as it was turning to taxy to the terminal? It's not that long since, so the majority of members will have been around at that time.

18 May 2005. Here's a link to the CAA incident report https://www.gov.uk/aaib-reports/aar-6-2 ... 8-may-2005

Spot on LBAspotter. I was at the Cemetary and I wondered why it was taking so long for it to taxy back to the terminal.

So similar to the Aurela 733 in 2012 that slid off the runway at BHX, causing Monarch to terminate their lease of it. I think that was a blessing in disguise as the 733 was old, unreliable and got Monarch a lot of bad press.

Did JMC fly out of LBA? I remember going to Plane Tree Hill in what must have been 2001 and distinctly remember seeing two JMC A320s parked on the apron. Or is my memory playing tricks on me? :s_dunno

I know that most of the charter flights back then were Airtours and Britannia, with the occasional Air 2000 I think.

I remember going to LBA during the euros 96. It was a Saturday evening and i think France vs Spain were playing at Elland road. I didnt take a camera, has anyone got any photos of that evening?

The date was 15 June 1996 - I have it etched in my memory - when France played Spain. In addition to AF 320;IB A300/B727/B757;Air Jet146;TAT F28;Aviaco DC9; Oasis DC9;Air Bristol 1-11;AirUK F100; we had B747SP of Corsair and AOM DC10. There are some photos of that day in the nostalgia gallery.

I have around 20 photos taken that day - at least, including the Corsair 747SP, AOM DC10, Iberia 727 200 & 757, Viva 737 300, Air International 737 200, MD83, Air France A320 100 (very rare, no winglets), and various others, mainly BAe 146, 1-11, F28, ATR42 etc. It wasn't just Saturday evening - it was all day!

Hi andyc941

Many of the photos in the Yeadon Airport Nostalgia Gallery were taken on that day by Marky810, White Heather, Seasider and myself Aviador. gallery/album.php?album_id=27/

Did you get to see Concorde nearly going off the end of the runway after landing halfway down the runway?

The one that everyone seems to forget about on that Saturday was the Britannia 767/200 that worked in early doors on the fortnightly Orlando flight. It parked sideways on stand 9. I will try and dig out a piccy that I took on what was a fantastic clear morning. It had gone whilst most people were polishing off their bacon butties.

There was also a Regional Airlines (French) J31 that parked over at Multiflight West (where the flymo's usually park today).

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
