The BIA 1-11 500 was used on the weekly Friday flight down to Mahon (Menorca) for Intasun. Often enough it didn't even have the range to get there without a splash and dash fuel stop somewhere in France. At times it virtually flew off the end of runway 14 (usually in hot weather), making LBA's runway look more like an aircraft carrier!

We flew with a Spanish airline called Universair(I think) from LBA to TFS. We had to tech stop in Santiago in north west Spain to pick up more fuel. Flight was nearly 7 hours long with the strong headwinds.
The first holiday I didn’t go with my parents they went off to Bulgaria. I think I’m still a bit envious of the fact my Mum has flown on a Tu-154 and I haven’t.

It was indeed Universair - one of those airlines from Spain where if you blinked, you would miss it. Luckily I didn't! Here is a photo of their 737 300 EC-EDM at LBA.View attachment 13842

Al this nostalgia has got me searching my photo file and this photo was taken in August 1974 about 7pm, from the viewing area at the side of the terminal. I believe it had come to pick up horses from the Ebor meeting at York.

Was Summer 85 the first season after the runway was extended? Thursday afternoons.....did we have 4 Britannia’s in? 1 767-200 from Palma and 3 737-200’s. I’m sure one of the 737’s only operated every 3 weeks to Salzburg cos Thomson’s only offered 10 or 11 night holidays there?

The Tu-154 aircraft were an amazing aircraft and one of my fondest from that era. Everything about them was truly amazing. The way they took off and climbed, the way they could glide down half the runway before touching down and still manage to stop with relative ease. The noise of the engines spooling up. Just brilliant.

The runway opened on 4th November 1984, so yes it was the first summer season.

Yes it was Aer Turas, and I believe it is a DC4. They were regular visitors with the horses, as even further back, were the BKS Airspeed Ambassadors.

OK then...photo challenge!! Let's see who can drag out some shots of the Bluebird Cargo 737, Star Air 727 working for UPS, Sterling 727 working a footie charter, and an Airtours DC10.

And who remembers this one? Arrived one week with Aeroflot markings to match the Aeroflot livery, and the following week it had become Baltic International - shortly after the end of the USSR.View attachment 13846

From my 'cellar' records, CCCP85546 made two visits on the 13th and 27th July 1992, both from and to Riga with the same flight numbers BIA9001/9002.

Wow - just discovered this forum! (....what have I been doing these last years to miss this?!).

Teenage spotter at LBA in the late 70's & early 80's - until being dragged off to college in Sept. 84 just before the extension opened. There's so much on here that brings back memories!
Grew up on the Scotland Way estate as a small kid before moving, in 74, to elsewhere in Horsforth. Still within biking distance of the airport though! I remember how quiet the Scotland Lane route used to be back in the 70's, unlike today - I'd hate to cycle it now.
Can vividly remember the BKS Viscounts flying over on the approach to 33. Was at junior school in the early 70's when Air Anglia lew in their F27s. Fond memories of the BA Viscount 802 & 806's (vaguely also remember the 700's), followed in 1980 by the 814/815's of BMA.

In 1991/92 I got a PPL Yorkshire Aeroplane Club around the south side of LBA while it was being run by Jill Tushingham. Flew all of the club C150s & C152s. Spent many a happy hour in the club there in the early 90's. Many of the airline pilots (especially Air UK & Jersey European) used to come to the club bar & regale us with stories. Was there the day in early 92 (?) when there were huge diversions inbound from all around the country - a very memorable day indeed.

So many photos on here bring back memories ! :)

Is this the DC-4 that burst most of its tyres when landing at LBA one day in the mid-70's, and spent quite some time parked in 'The Pan' until it was repaired & flew off? Anyone remember that incident?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
