Was having a think about the forum posts above i thought "what was the best period of time at LBA in terms of airline variety and aircraft type?" although not as busy as now id say between 1984 and 1990? I was only a little one at the time so dont remember too much, but does anyone have a specific year they feel is the winner? And what airlines and aircraft type were operating that year?
Now in 2022 we mainly just see B737s but with flybe, aer lingus and hopefully IPS which if happens would be great, then it should turn out more interesting than we thought. Ads move this post to the relevant one if needed.

Yes a good year when we had the 'proper' length of runway available without the politically correct displaced threshold which has had really restrictive consequences! (Less risk of undershooting some will argue - but a greater risk of running off t'other end!!

I could not imagine a pilot undershooting the runway, has this ever happened elsewhere, Only one that comes to mind is that asiana at san fran?

If they do, it's usually due to wind shear or a technical issue such as that experienced by the BA 777 at LHR caused by ice blocking fuel lines and resulting in a loss if thrust to both engines on finals, or the British Midland 737 400 at EMA that crashed in the M1 embankment after engine failure en route between LHR and BFS.
With ILS it shouldn't happen unless the ILS is out of use and an aircraft is landing in poor visibility when really, it shouldn't be. Even then, the decision height means that an undershoot shouldn't happen. But they still do!

Only at LBA would we build a decent runway extension and then effectively only use half of it because the touchdown point is moved a few hundred metres down the runway, to a nice spot where the runway also has a slope - just to keep pilots on their toes!

I think you might want to think again on that undershoots have happened many times around the world try the BA 777 at LHR not so long ago for starters.

Landing short is far more dangerous due to the speed at touch down compared to running out of tarmac at the end of the runway.

Can't beat the good old Dart days in the late 70's for me - Viscounts, F27s, 748s and the odd Herald.
Add to that Britannia 737s and Aer Lingus 737s/1-11s.
Plus the odd specials - Aviaco DC-9s, Sterling Caravelles etc :)

I would say around 1986 was best. 747s, Tristars, the odd DC10, A300s, A310s, 727s, 737s, 707s, the occasional DC8, DC9s, 1-11s then all the regular turbo props and still the occasional Viscount.
Great times. Noisy times too! Loved it.

Yes indeed the late 80's were cracking times for the LBA. Balkan 154, Jat B727 and an Aviogenex B732 all on a Sunday teatime. Interflug 134 charters and too many Spanish charter flights to mention. Airlines were still using types from the 50's and 60's hence the wide variation of aircraft. I took my driving test on Tuesday 1st Sept 1987 and a Worldways DC8 passed overhead on approach as I drove away from the test centre on low lane!

The last aircraft type you mentioned 'LBAYORKIE' sparks a distant memory. There was only ever one Nord 262 on the British register, G-AYFR operated by Dan Air on their 'Link City' schedule NCL-MAN/LPL-BOH. I presume that it visited LBA at sometime, maybe on diversion, but I don't have any record. Our based Dan Air unit at the same time was Avro 748 G-ARAY on the GLA route.
