Leeds Bradford: Aviation Nostalgia Thread

The last aircraft type you mentioned 'LBAYORKIE' sparks a distant memory. There was only ever one Nord 262 on the British register, G-AYFR operated by Dan Air on their 'Link City' schedule NCL-MAN/LPL-BOH. I presume that it visited LBA at sometime, maybe on diversion, but I don't have any record. Our based Dan Air unit at the same time was Avro 748 G-ARAY on the GLA route.

It wasnt Dan Air's 262. I think it was Busy Bee. Having said that I'm sure we saw some from other airlines. Also, I forgot to mention Carvairs which were fairly frequent transporting racehorses.

Interflug IL18 charter. Fred Olsen Electras and also an odd Balair DC4 (or was it a DC6?), Busy Bee F27 and Nord 262's.
We also had an Interflug Tu134, Braathens SAFE F27 and 737 200 and definitely had the occasional DC6 flying horse box.
Loads of different Viscounts still about then too plus regular F27s with Air UK and Jersey European, whilst Capital were approaching their peak in the late 80s before it all fell apart due to Brown Group (who made Moxy Dump Trucks) going bust.
It felt really busy, and they were great days. The camera was always out. But it wasn't busy compared to now. Just more interesting and my camera is idle these days.

I think you might want to think again on that undershoots have happened many times around the world try the BA 777 at LHR not so long ago for starters.

Landing short is far more dangerous due to the speed at touch down compared to running out of tarmac at the end of the runway.
The increase in height on the glideslope would get you a tad nearer the runway in the event of a catastrophic event - but not significantly so. Building housing at the end of the runway is the far more dangerous issue than where the threshold is sited!

Hi
I'm a new member so excuse i don't know the ropes. I have a Querry Back in October 1980 when i was Eng Manager of BMA i was urgently sent to LBA to assist in the recovery og G - AZLT that had what is known as Runway excursion. It was of the side with the port leg collapsed and fuel leaking from Number two main tank. First job stop fuel running down the hill into the resevoir . A Typical Wild and wet night . Along with Josh Marshall Dans ENg we prepared it for removal next morning when th AIB inspectors arrived . I am tying to find any images of it either on the Runway or on the Heanor Haulage truck when we moved it by road back to EMA< Feb 1981
Thanks Bedes ( The Bear)

BRITISH ISLES AVIATION SOCIETY aka BIAS

Was anybody on here a member of this club ? I was, from 1986 to 1989, then I didn't have the money to renew my subs so that was that. I managed to get to most of the Sunday meetings during that period and I still have all my copies of 'Rotate', where I made one or two contributions.

Yes, I was a member but only as a magazine recipient. I contributed to the movements section every time we had a holiday to Spain or Switzerland etc. For some unknown reason I remember the Luton contributors name : Kaz Ale - no idea why.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?

I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
