Re: Nostalgia Thread

I agree, no LBA spotter should be without one. Best read I have had in years.

Oh if we are going for the best aircraft noise ever at LBA. Then nothing in this world beats a the roar off Concorde's 4x Olympus 593's....

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Fabulous guys, thanks.

I have photos of the Varna Tu154 - its a good while ago now - did you notice the Hispania 733 parked up on the apron as it took off? - and they went bust around 1989 I think!

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Was the Concorde landing the infamous late touchdown one landing into the evening sun? Jeez he was nearly at 28 before the main wheels hit. Bet the brakes were off-limits for an hour or more.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Someone pointed out to me that if you listen carefully to that clip, you can hear the airport crash alarm being sounded as the nose wheel starts to come down !! It must have been quite a sight from the tower.

I remember that one Bobleeds I was up there at the time, seem to recall some comment between the tower and pilot about drycleaners!

I think I must have been stood next to the person who took that footage. I remember saying "god'o'god'o'god'o'god'o'god'o'god" willing it down safely. I remember hearing the dry cleaner conversation too. It was one of the most hairy moments I have ever seen at the airport I have to say. I seem to remember also hearing the pilot blaming the sun for the late landing. It was the finishing touch to a great day during the Euro '96.

Re: Movements Log & Heads Up

Probably a bit off topic, but this flight reminded me of a flight I was on which was chartered by LBA to celebrate the start of 24H operations in the late 90's. I took my nephew for what was his first (and so far, only) flight. The flight was operated by an Air Europa 737-200 and routed from LBA to Blackpool, then to the Isle of Man, then up to the Solway Firth, across to Carlisle, over the Lake District and back down to LBA. The highlight of the trip was at Blackpool, where we did a fast flypast just a few hundred feet above the runway, climbing out over the coast very steeply and at higher than normal speed. We had gone to Blackpool because the director there at the time had previously been deputy at LBA and had not left too long before (Roy Minear). It was certainly the most exciting flight experience I have had. There was no Santa on board, but getting 24 hour flying back was better than any Christmas present!

White Heather

Were you on the first or the second flight? I remember it well, the aircraft was a 737-300 series not 200. I remember going up to the lakes and doing a fly by at Blackpool too. The first flight was mostly airport staff, the second was mostly enthusiasts.

Re: Movements Log & Heads Up

I remember having a trip out on Air Europe B752 from LBIA over IOM etc. Long time back though.

Aviador, I think it was the first, but I was on the airport staff flight along with a few civic folk. I was invited by Gordon Dennison as a thank you for the support - I don't remember much about who was on it and obviously couldn't even remember if it was a 732 or 733. I will always remember the fly past down the runway at Blackpool though.

Re: Movements Log & Heads Up

Hi Pete,

My first flight was on an Air Europe "Easter Bunny Special" on a 757 from LBA in April 1986 about £30 if I remember - off 32 went over Harrogate, York and Flamborough then out over North Sea with very low figure 8 round an oil or gas rig and a supply vessel (abot 300ft) then climbed back to around 15,000 up north sea then back over Edinburgh, Newcastle with a very very low approach and go around (seemed almost vertical) at Linton on Ouse before approach and a lazy circle over Leeds and landing back on 32 - even got an Easter Egg!! Any other old forumers on board that day?

Re: Movements Log & Heads Up

Hi Bob,

sounds like a nice trip. That's the right time period for my flight. Definitely went over the Isle of Man though. Weather was not great though with fairly low cloud seem to remember only just making out Ronaldsway.

ps also got a late ticket on the Virgin jumbo to LGW. Not many trips these days at LBA. Did go on the DC-3 flights too a few years back.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

A few years back I flew on an Air Atlantique DC3 positioning up from Coventry to do some local pleasure flights. Seemed to take almost as long as the coach on the way down!

Re: Nostalgia Thread

[offtopic]I was there in the school's last year before it closed. It was a very sad occasion. It should never have been closed but it was just part of a catalogue of failings by Leeds city council[/offtopic]

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I have recently been looking through my slides from 1974 (when I started) when I realised I had taken a photo of a Transavia Caravelle. It set me thinking and I believe it was on a short series of flights taking people to the Dutch Bulbfields. Does anyone remember which other airlines were used? (if any)

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
