I thought that Seasider and I had never met, but it is clear from those excellent photos that he was stood in the same place as me on that fabulous day - as I have similar photos of the Aviacos Oasis and TAT F28 taken in the same place. So perhaps we have!

White Heather - don't tell my wife, she thought I had gone to take pictures of the aeroplanes!

Were you there when the Air France Concorde came in in '86?

Seasider, I won't tell. ;) Looks like Aviador was there too as we all have photos of the Aviaco's taken at the same place.

I was there for the Air France Concorde but was lucky enough to have an invite to go in the airport staff, family and friends enclosure between the terminal and road tunnel. The photo I posted of the aircraft (in the Nostalgia photos) was taken from there, hence the unusual angle.

Yes I was there too so I expect we all know each other. I've just uploaded the final lot. I might drag some across later but they're in the gallery now if anybody wants to look.

I must have been up there at the same time as you guys too - see photos in the nostalgia gallery! Is the footpath still a quagmire until summer?

Request for assistance. Does anyone have any pictures of the BA Concorde G-BOAA landing at LBA on the evening of 2/9/95?

Is that the one when the tower mentioned the 'dry cleaners'? Low sun in pilots eyes and only just managed to stop at the end of 32?

You're not wrong. They had to peel everyone off the seat in front. Never known reverse thrust like it!!

I was at the end near the loop listening to ATC and remember the feeling of embarrassment and shock at the thought of it overrunning onto the grass.
Sorry I don't have any photos I don't think

Think you all meaning this landing. I was also up on the hill that evening.

He landed on runway 32 in very bad sun light as the sun was setting. He was actually still on his landing roll whilst turning into the 14 Loop. You can hear the emergency alarm go off as the Tower Controller that evening must have though the aircraft could have ended off the runway and down the banking. I have been told by a Senior British Airways Concorde Engineer that a bunch of guys were dispatched up to Leeds/Bradford that evening from London Heathrow so to work over night as they needed to replace some of the over heated breaks and a few tires which needed replacing due to the heavy breaking making them deflate.

Christ almighty. I never realised it was that bad. Think of all us poor sods on it!!!!!!

Great video thanks for sharing!

Now to reality this is the reason why LBA will never handle anything large on a regular basis. It doesn't matter what the airport say they can handle there not sat in front seats! If it had been a 777 with 300 pax and tonnes of baggage/freight LBA would be on news channels all over the world for all the wrong reasons!

The margins are simply too small for anyone to take the risk.

Real shame...

Don't get me going LBA787!

It landed on the midpoint of the runway.

[offtopic]As discussed in great length throughout the forum, moving the touchdown markers would greatly improve the performance of all aircraft operations from LBA.[/offtopic]

And last year the Business Air B767 ( Thai Registered ) touched down at the runway 28 crossing point whilst landing on 32 in the early morning. I still dont know how he stopped in time.

No it wasn't Aviador. I went on it in 1995 not 1996. I was over at the Multiflight cafe for the daya of the Euro 96 cop-fest.

Hi Bigman

I'm not saying you didn't fly on Concorde in 1995.

The video shown is from the big Euro96 day. The day when Concorde nearly overran the runway.

If you look at the video once again, at 31 seconds you can just make out the AOM DC10 parked facing west. One of the aircraft that brought the French to watch the France vs Spain game.

I have been "sorting" a few things out and came across a LBA timetable for August 1970, my own compilation.
LHR - 4/day
BFS - 2/day
DUB - 1/day
JER - 1/day
GCI - 4/week
Flown by BKS Viscount
GLA - 2/day
LTN - 2/day
Flown by BMA Viscount
DUB - 1/day
Flown by Aer Lingus Viscount
IOM - 1/day
Flown by BIA Herald

That's 14 flights per day all on Viscounts except one. Those were the days!!

A message for the younger members: If you get bored at LBA now, think what it was like then.

Very true Seasider, but imagine the excitement when Aer Lingus finally brought us a combination of 1-11's and 737-200's on the DUB route. We had never seen such a thing at LBA and there was excitement every time they arrived. It was another 14 years before the true excitement really started after the runway extension, but even before hand, we had the occasional treat such as a UAE Boeing 720, Monarch 757, and of course a regular stream of 737's belonging to various charter airlines such as Britannia, Monarch, Air Europe, etc. Them was the days...............

I had an interesting encounter last week in Durham. I was speaking at an international student conference, and on the same bill was Tony Delahunty, formerly of local BBC. Tony gave a very moving talk about journalism, particularly in relation to the Bradford Fire disaster, at which he was present. After the fire disaster Tony had been put on leave to have a break and to try and get his head back together. He went to Mallorca, and by coincidence the team that Bradford had been playing (Lincoln City) were also sent to Mallorca for the same reason, and were on the same flight out of LBA as Tony.

What made the story even more incredible was the the return flight that Tony took back to LBA was British Airtours Lockheed Tristar G-BBAI - which skidded off the end of the runway on arrival. Tony spoke about seizing opportunities, and maintaining a professional head in times of crisis, he is an excellent speaker, not surprising considering his radio journalism background.

But here's the real twist in the tale. One of the girls in the audience (Spanish I believe) approached Tony after he had finished and told him, that her father had bought a Lockheed Tristar that had once been involved in an accident in England (I'm not sure for what purpose). She didn't know the registration (which might have changed anyway), but what would the odds be of it being the same plane!?

Interesting Galaxy - I guess there must be a good chance it was the Molly McGreadie Rose (G-BBAI). A minor detail though - it didn't skid off the end of the runway - it simply over-ran it through landing far too far down. 27th May 1985. Bank Holiday Monday.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
