Now if we had our now cancelled shiny new terminal things im sure would be very bright at LBA.
I don't know much about freight operations but with a much reduced work force could DSA be used just for freight or is simply the case no way enough freight aircraft pass through the airport to make it profitable esp with EMA nearby?
The latter.

It's easy to be the best when it's half empty much of the time and in a nice new terminal. Being best and being viable are two different things. Now, it will soon be just a memory.
It wasn't the strap line I was highlighting, if you click on it there's the full statement from Peel.

If Wizz come and operate routes not operated by your favourite airline, Ryanair, then it's a good thing. Ryanair are unlikely to operate to the likes of Bucharest, Sofia, Katowice,Kaunas etc. so why not? The more carriers the better. And it will make a change to see your Purple Monster Airbus aircraft on the deck instead of endless 737 types.

However, this, is tge TUi thread. There are other places to debate Wizz.

Katowice and Kraków arę very near each other, with a very good road network and train network to connect both them. So Leeds already, indirectly, serves Katowice via two carriers - all be it one isn't currently doing LBA KRK flights. Why I'll never know.

I don't think Sofia would work out of Leeds as much as it would be nice to have on the destination list. If it did work especially during the winter months, like most other bases, we'd see Jet2 do their weekly Saturday afternoon charter to there and back on behalf of Balkan holidays for Ski resorts. Evidence that if they cannot fill it for Ski holidays when it's a cheaper alternative to the alps what hope do they have. Do we even have a large enough customer demand for Bulgarian travel?

If they come I wish them well. If they provoke Ryanair I hope they loose. If anyone uses Wizz Air I wish you well - their customer service is shocking.

Regardless of aircraft types; what's needed is through traffic from the airport. I don't care what aircraft types operate tbh, we've gone from the age of TUI154, B757, MD83, to a simple two type. As spotters it maybe boring but from a bean counter point of view it's efficient.

We'd get more out of more Ryanair or easyJet tbh.

The airport has aspirations to grow to 7m passengers - pretty much double it’s current throughput. i can’t think of any airport that achieves that volume with 2 anchor carriers. It needs 3 if not 4 to provide the platform to have a decent size operation. Ryanair have never grown beyond 3 based aircraft in over 10 years of based operations so although they are theoretically big enough to drive the growth the airport wants, history suggests they won’t. And even if they did, the airport would be massively leveraged against an airline that has historically been quick to exploit that leverage with far bigger airports than somewhere like LBA. I’m sure the airport will push them for more, but they need other airlines to have a credible chance to push towards their 7m target. As of today, 2 potential carriers that could provide that kind of role have come onto the market by virtue of the DSA closure. Make no mistake, it‘s a once in generation opportunity.

On the Flybe thread it mentions STS are looking for engineers with A320 experience. Presumably just a coincidence.
Remember this from June?

It's making more sense now with Wizz coming to LBA, plus the possibility of another airline, which means far more Airbus movements at LBA in future. We are also seeing an increase in easyJet movements over winter and next summer.

This makes me even more suspicious that Wizz Europe were planning a move to LBA long before the DSA review was announced. Their arrival at LBA is the only increase in Airbus ops here that is big enough to warrant a recruitment campaign like this for Airbus trained engineers at LBA.

Does anyone know why LBA took so long to change from self-manouevering aircraft stands to nose-in parking ? The change didn't happen until 1997, by which time similar airports such as Newcastle and East Midlands had long since adopted it. I remember Ryanair resisted at first, with their Dublin 732's parking on stand 3 facing east. They complied eventually!

Thankyou.

Self manoeuvring is more cost effective because no tugs are required. However it takes up much, much more space so I assume the change occurred because of the number of aircraft that had to be accommodated at any given time exceeded the capacity of the apron. Plus of course nose-in is a necessity for air bridges

If my memory serves me correctly Schiphol for many years had air bridges that served aircraft parked side-on. I agree however that it is much more cost effective to have aircraft park nose in as so much more space becomes available.

I just thought it was odd that LBA was so late to the nose-in party, so to speak. I wonder if there was resistance from airport or airline management?

The first floor walkway around the terminal to immigration was originally designed to accommodate a further two air bridges. I think a combination of subsequent changes to the type of airlines serving LBA and CAA requirements associated with the ILS this might now never be possible.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
