Aviador, wasn't it Air Atlanta that were chartered by Leeds United to take their fans down to Barcelona for the European Cup match? I seem to recall it was, and there were 2 of them. Both left LBA after bringing the fans back at around 4.00am, on runway 14. Impossible to miss!
I don't remember. I recall Monarch doing a number of Charters for Leeds United and they always got caught out with bad weather on the return. Did Air Atlanta use LBA before or after the Monarch flights?

That TriStar visited in about 96/97, I think. It was operated by Aer Turas, subbing for Airtours IIRC. What I do remember is that the APU was bust so it needed an air start and the cockpit to ground intercom was also buggered so it was a hand signals job. Wot fun !

Yes the tristar was a sub for regular winter Airtours B 757 on the Sat pm Alicante, as at the time they were short of A/C due to one being damaged in an abortive landing in the Dominican republic (G-WJAN) i think. The Icelandic B 747 was a Lourdes charter.

I have checked and apparently it was Corsair that flew Leeds United down to Spain in 2004 - a 747 200 and a 737 300 it would seem and yes, the Air Atlanta was a Lourdes charter - something Corsair have also done with their 747s.

This was the airside corner of the Terminal Building and the sign for Stand 6 indicates we only had six stands at that time! The black hangar on the right of the photo housed the temporary Terminal Building until around 1968 when the new purpose built facility opened. The hangar base area is now three metres below the present Stand 8. Old memories ........

This photo was taken from the present location of Taxiway Alpha at the rear of Stand 7. An Air UK Fokker Friendship awaits its next flight on Stand 5 (is that you 'A300 Boy' doing your engineering checks?). Note the ATC tower before the Radar room windows were installed below the VCR. Old memories ..........

View attachment 5290 The Old Apron

The access to this apron was via a ramp down from Runway 28/10, now the present Taxiway November. The area was used for normal aircraft turnarounds when the temporary Terminal facilities were located in the hangar. The hangar returned to the use for which it was intended and the photo, taken three metres down from the surface of the present Stands 9 and 10, shows a Shorts 330 of Genair in BCAL colours parked outside. Old memories ........

The BKS and Northeast Airlines Viscounts were maintained in that hangar too (and I presume some maintenence continued even after they became part of British Airways). I had a relative who worked for BKS/Northeast/BA on these Viscounts and he let me into the hangar one evening whilst G-AOYR was being maintained. It was the first and last time I have sat in the captains seat - and been a wing walker!

Apologies for the poor photo, but the aircraft parked on Stand 4 was the first ever visit of a Boeing 757 to LBA on 23 February 1984. Monarch's G-MOND was substituting for a Britannia Airways Boeing 737-200 on a Spanish inclusive tour flight and used the 5,400ft Runway 33 with ease. Old memories ........

The first (combination) photos show the land side entrance doors to the left with the Menzies general shop, the departures seating area, and the airline ticket desks to the rear. The boarding gates were to the right where the security checks were carried out.
The second (single) photo is from a different angle and features the Duty Office where all the day's departures and arrivals were displayed on a peg board. Old memories ........

'Barnsley Holidays' was very lucky to be allowed to make use of the Air Traffic balcony to record a British Midland Viscount 810 on turnround while operating the Heathrow schedule. Note the interesting ground vehicles including the cleaner's van, this in the days when cabin crew weren't expected to pick litter off the floor! Old memories ........

From what I remember the shop was owned by the same people who owned the newsagents at the top of the high street. The manageress was Anne Elwick, her husband Vic worked for BA cargo in the transit shed in the old flightshed. They had a fantastic counter top cabinet full of enamel airline badges, I still have the BKS one that I bought in roughly 1977.

Just checked my collection purchased from said shop in the early 80's.

Still in possession of British Midland, Britannia, Monarch, Lufthansa and Air India enamel badges.

I remember it so well. I can recall going to the airport to see this bird when I was 10 years old. I think the runway extension was well underway when Monarch came in. Happy days.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
