I am not sure when Runway 01/19 was taken out of service to become the North-South taxiway, but I believe it was well before Air Anglia operated at LBA. I know an ex ground dispatcher who worked for Servisair at this time and he confirmed that the only take off data for the airfield were for Runways 33/15 and 28/10.Air Anglia F27's regularly used the short runway when the wind was appropriate. I can just remember 01/19 being used on the odd occasion.
One aircraft that did use runway 19 was the RAF Varsity that for many years languished on the western boundary as the airport fire practice aircraft. I was at the airport when it landed and was very surprised to see it land that way, although as it turned out, it placed it at the closest point to the fire dump after landing. I seem to recall it remaining in the loop next to the golf course after landing and very soon after, it was on the fire dump.
I thought it would be interesting to look at just how many British Isles routes we have lost over the years. I think the list goes like this:
Aberdeen, Belfast International, Bristol, Cardiff, Cork, Edinburgh, Exeter, Galway, Glasgow International, Inverness, Isle of Man, London City, London Gatwick, London Luton, Norwich, Plymouth, Shannon.
Sadly really considering how useful these links used to be…and could still be.
Ireland is part of the British Isles. Not sure how the folks in Shannon will react to being in the British Isles lol
Euro Direct didn't operate Jetstreams. They only had 5 Bae APT.
