I remember watching from the top of Yeadon Moor, I don't think he left the aircraft for some reason. Everyone was disappointed. Anyone else remember this ??

I wasnt born but have a collection of 'Yeadon Air Pageant' memorobilia incl posters. Theres another video on Youtube dated one year later which deals with the display at Speke where he was killed. Between 1926 and 1960 there were 75 birdmen, 73 of whom were killed. There was another notable birdman from Otley who was one of the survivors!

I didn't see him leave the aircraft in the various shots shown.

Pathe has put its entire output on YouTube (if not all of it then much of it) with the commentary superimposed as shown in their cinema news reels of the time.

In addition there are numerous sequences of unused film that didn't make it into the news reels also placed on YouTube by Pathe. These are silent.

It might be that in this instance that because the birdman didn't leave the aircraft Pathe decided not to show the event at all as part of a cinema news reel.

With the east of Ukraine very much in the news, it prompted me to check back on a rare LBA visitor. In the 2002/3 season UEFA Cup 1st round, Leeds United were selected to play against Metalurg Zaporizhia. Yak42 UR-42381 of Donbass Eastern Ukrainian Airlines brought the visitors over 'UDC5883/5884' and stayed from 18th to 20th September 2002.

The LUFC team and officials used Maersk Boeing 737-500 OY-APB, out 02 October 2002 'DAN9783/1783' Copenhagen - Dnepropetrovsk, and in 04 October 2002 DAN1784/9784' Dnepropetrovsk - Copenhagen.

Hills Airport Shops. Does anybody, apart from me, remember them at Leeds Bradford ? They had two shops in the terminal up to about 1985 when the extension was opened. The main one was just to the left of the check-in desks with a smaller one under the staircase by the payphones. The latter was never open as I recall. Betty was one of the ladies who worked there.

I remember a shop in that location in the late seventies. I think it had links to a newsagents near the top of the high street in Yeadon. The manageress at that time was Anne Eldwick. Not someone you wanted to cross!

Anne was to be feared, but her husband Vic was completely the opposite. Vic worked (I think) for British Airways Cargo at LBA.

A family member briefly worked at one of the freight forwarding companies in the mid-1980s. I think it was Burlington. Her gaffer was Eddie Robinson. She also remembers Betty from the airport shop. I bought my very first Civil Aircraft Markings book there in 1982 for the princely sum of £1.25. That was virtually all the change I had with me at the time!

Yes, it was Burlington. Eddie was a well known character who worked there for a number of years and before that at Archbold Airfreight. At that time the office was in a portakabin in front of the old flight shed if I remember correctly. I remember the shop had a small wooden cabinet with enamel airline badges in it. Ive still got my BKS one. I think I negotiated a special price as at the time I bought it they were already several years defunct. I used to buy Aviation News there in the days when it was a newspaper format. I remember those days working for LEP Air and Brantford International with affection and often wonder where all the people are now that I worked with and amongst.

Ironic that in the 70s and 80s, air freight was still a consideration at LBA while the airport was still on the small side. Fast forward 30-plus years and there's no freight handling facility at all. Just passengers.

Airfreight was booming at that time. There was a large transit shed, several trailers a day from various airports (mainly imports) and lots of flown freight. There were many freight agents and the freight supported other jobs in Customs and the airport in general. It was a significant contributor. Unfortunately it was taken for granted and treated with apathy by a succession of airport owners and thats a significant reason for the airport having no freight operations today.

As a Customs Officer I used to deal with, amongst other things, the import documentation for the freight operations at LBA. There was lots of it! Strangely enough it was dealt with in detail at Leeds Containerbase (Stourton) where I was based after the goods had been released (after an initial check at LBA) for fast clearance.

At one time I seem to remember all entries were lodged at the Containerbase. That was before LBA became an EPU. When I first started Dave Swift and Peter Pearce were the SO's. I can remember most of the names of the officers from the time I started to when operations moved to Peter Bennett House. I keep meaning to pop in to see Steve Roberts at his home. Last spoke to him a couple of years ago.
