I was at the very end of 32 that day with a mate of mine as we didn't want to photo into the sun. What a fantastic day we spent, never to be repeated again. We went home around half five for tea and to watch last bit of England v Scotland! Came back later for the departures and was there until the early hours. A Challenge Air DC10 arrived around 1am on the Sunday after. I have some excellent video and photos of the whole day/night.

I've been looking back through the photos in the Nostalgia Gallery. It's hard to believe we enthusiasts used to spend hours on end waiting around for the odd jet or two in between the Friendships and the Shorts.

I can remember getting up at 6am to cycle up to LBA to catch the early morning Balkan Holidays Tu-154 closely followed by the Aspro 737-300 from Heraklion.

I recall popping home for a couple of hours before returning to catch the dan-dares rockets. There were a few spotters who used to do the same and we'd have a good natter, usually putting the aviation world to right or discussing the latest rumours which very rarely came to fruition.

Those were the days!

I know what you mean. Turning up on a Sunday to see the odd Short 360 or F27 land. I turn up now and even on a winter morning there are around 12 jets on stands plus the usual couple of rubber bands.

I can't remember what day this was, think it was a Thursday afternoon. A trip down the perimeter track usually with the wrong shoes on. A long wait on the corner by the golf course hut listening to the Curlew birds during the long gaps. Curlew sound recording Usually well worth the wait when the Britannia 767-200 finally arrived. Followed by another walk dodging the puddles on the path back to Plane Tree Hill or the "bomb holes" as some used to call it.

At least then we could rest the camera lens on the top of the green chain link fencing, that was always ever so slightly bent over at the top, to get a decent steady shot.

I never had the right shoes on either and in winter the only bit of the path that wasn't mud and puddles was the 6 inches down each side next to the fence, which was usually tufted grass. Summer was usually OK, just masses of nettles to contend with instead.

I haven't been down that path in years - partly due to the mud and nettels, partly due to the big fence they put up and partly as I used to be a member at Horsforth Golf Club and miss it - so being next to the course and seeing others enjoying the golf does little for my demeanour. Added to which I value the suspension on my car too much to drive on to Plane Tree Hill these days.

Yes, I remember hopping from left to right on the grass to the sides of the path. I can recall the groundsman from the golf course rerouting the water down towards the path one year then it got a whole lot worse after that.

I've taken pictures from that spot since then. It's not as easy but it is still possible using manual focus so you can't see the fence.

I always go to this spot , park the car before the police sign then walk down with my wellies on to the threshold. There is a small mound that has been built (for one person) so you can see above the fence line, this is the best spot at leeds for photos i thnk. I was down there for the BH air A330 all by myself!

This has to be one of the best photos of Concorde we have hosted on Forums4airports.

I think this was taken during the winter of 1997 unless anybody thinks differently?

Does anyone remember the Phillippines S360 at LBA. Why was it there? I seem to remember it was parked for a while over where Multiflight is now

Yes, remember it well. There were 2 others which joined as well, have the photos somewhere. I think they were there for short-term storage or maintainance.

I seem to recall they were under maintenance at Multiflight. I wondered at the time if any of them were the ex Capital Airlines machines (360 300's) that were, of course, based at LBA in the 1980s until they ceased operations. I am fairly sure that their 360s went to Phillippines Airlines.

White Heather it wont have been Multiflight's Hangar when them Phillippines Airlines Shorts 360's were parked up. I'm sure back then the smaller hangar belonged to Lambson Aviation after they acquired the assests of Capital Airlines and its Northair subsidiary when they went bust. Eventually Lambson Aviation went on to set up its own Leeds based airline Yorkshire European Airways which after a short few years became Knight Air using a fleet of 5 Embraer 110 Bandeirantes. Meanwhile the larger hangar was owned by Yorkshire Light.

this was 1994

Well it will still have been Lambson Aviation owned hangar in 1994 as the owner of Multiflight Mr David Hood OBE was just using his Falcon business jet which was hangared at LBA during this time for his travelling needs seen as he owned Shipley-based Pace Micro Technology plc.
Mr Hood bought Lambson Aviation along with its Knight Air operation in 1996 which was not long after the 1995 crash of the airlines Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante G-OEAA over Dunkeswick Moor which killed all on-board. Shortly afterwards he set up the Multiflight aircraft maintenance business as well as providing Private Pilot's Licence (PPL) and commercial flight training but decided to sell the airline business Knightair onto Manx Airlines whom then introduced the Jetstream 41's

Thanks for your replies guys.

Some good history.

I used to go up to the airport every Tuesday after school with my granddad to watch planes.

Same every week, but still loved it.

Euro 96 was probably the highlight.

Yes, you are correct lbaspotter. I had forgotten just how long ago it was, and it seems quite likely therefore that the Shorts 360s may well have been the same machines that were operating for Capital.

With regard to Knight Air, I think they only had 2 Bandeirantes, G-OEAA, which as you have already mentioned was lost just outside Leeds en route to Aberdeen, and G-OEAB.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
