Wizz air is the airline id love to see big expansion from at LBA, they have a large presence in the south and west but LBA would be the perfect choice for a large eastern ops, a whole market to themselves without really diluting their other bases, also many airlines operate a large MAN base and LBA usually gets a lesser ops but due to no wizz presence at MAN then LBA can perhaps fight back more and offer routes not served by the airport over the hill, and of course there are many key routes that could be flown out of leeds, as mentioned vilnius is one destination that would be a winner
Finally they use ideal aircraft for a leeds ops esp the A321s.
So for me wizz is my number 1 id love to see expansion from.

The airline expects that 40 aircraft will be grounded due to the engine problems until 2026. Added to this they are slowing down deliveries of new aircraft from Airbus to 2030 which together means their expansion plans for new routes/increased frequencies will not be as ambitious as originally planned. Whether this has any effect on any proposed expansion at LBA only time will tell.

One wonders if wizz would of had a larger LBA presence if they were not having engine issues? But good signs if their current routes and frequency are remaining the same!

Wizz Air operated 19x weekly flights in summer 2023 from LBA, however in summer 2025 that's down to 11 (with the loss of 3x routes to KTW, KRK and WRO). These three bases have all increased in size since 2023 too, so the loss is not down to aircraft availability.
Here's a little chart showing Wizz Air's presence at LBA (let's not even bring up what it used to be at DSA).

Even though Wizz Air still have a number of aircraft parked due to engine problems, this summer there will be an increase of 19x aircraft flying vs summer 2024. In summer 2025, Wizz Air will have extra based aircraft at OTP, CRA, SCZ, WAW, GDN, KRK, FCO, MXP, VCE, LGW, BUD, TIA, AUH, BEG and a new base at RMO vs summer 2024.
Unfortunately the argument that they haven't increased their operations at LBA due to a shortage of aircraft doesn't make sense.

Below shows all of the Wizz Air bases (not including LTN and LGW) and the weekly flights operated to UK airports. This should give an idea of which routes might be likely if Wizz are to increase their presence at LBA.

I must admit Ive seen some press releases heralding new routes between continental destinations so you may well be right in your hypothesis.

Instead of the hypothesis that they are not opening new routes to LBA because of the limited aircraft I'm going to go down the other route.

Wizz do well in their "home markets" (Hungary, Romania) whilst Ryanair will battle tooth and nail in any other Eastern European market - usually a gentleman's agreement which is "if we go there you can have it, we'll take this, but come near us we'll also go into that base we said we wouldn't and go in hard".

Take Poland for example. They have battle grounds at some airport's but Katowice and Krakow are two airports where both have a "base" with the other been larger in one then the other - almost a gentleman's agreement.

I believe Ryanair will take the Eastern European market (except Romania) and they both will cohabit nicely on the volume routes out of the UK or routes/bases/destinations which Ryanair would rather not touch.

This brings me onto the second point which is I genuinely think will impact Wizz @ LBA is that they'd rather go east / Middle Eastern / your uncle Stan countries over battling Ryanair and offer a low cost alternative to the "full service" carrier on point to point routes where there is limited to nil competition and where revenue, yield and therefore subsequent profit is good. After all I doubt we'll see Ryanair heading that way, I don't think anyway.

As for in Europe I think there are a couple of areas where Wizz maybe interested - Germany if they ever get over the net zero cult / local closure BS / allow competition in. But then flying satsuma and flying circus will also be interested. Italy - all three are battling that out.

Nordic - they tried but against Norwegian. Do think there is a market for them in the Nordic countries my self.

Ukraine - when that opens MOL has already stated he thinks the routes / traffic will be good for very quick & large growth. I believe both Ryan & Wizz will battle this out. But do think that we may see one or two Ukrainian routes courtesy of Wizz from LBA given the strong Ukrainian population here.

Looks like we are getting a slight increase by Wizz Air on the Leeds to Cluj Napoca route for 4 weeks during October, with a 3rd weekly (Wednesday) rotation being added using an Airbus A320 as follows.

Wednesdays, October 1st, 8th, 15th & 22nd 2025
WMT3313 = CLJ 11:45 - LBA 12:55 / WMT3314 = LBA 13:25 - CLJ 18:25

Wonder if this will carry on through winter as 29Oct will be the first Wednesday after the clocks change so perhaps still some hope for that to happen.

Hopefully a good sign the route is performing well and maybe, just maybe, the early signs of Wizz a/c issues starting to ease.

Whatever the reasons and durations involved, every little increase is welcomed all the same

Fingers crossed it's a sign of the A321 issues starting to ease and fleet getting back onto expansion mode.

Be good to see if LBA can secure more routings out of Wizz from LBA. We do need it as Ryanair's offering is somewhat limited ... of course Ryanair have to compete on the bucket & spade market also.

One day hopefully soon we will see 5 Wizz Airbuses on the deck most days of the week.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
