I was on duty at Northair and stood in the reception area with the ICI driver waiting for it to land looking out towards the end of runway when the phone rang and Atc told us Captain Bell had just reported an accident. That was a Cessna 414 G-BOAZ which was due to fly to Pakistan the next day for operations by the UN. Happened in 1980
The first accident I recall at the airport is British Midland DC-3 G-ANTD in 1965. The aircraft ran off the end of the runway(32) into the excavations was the extension. It was sat on a pile of earth for a couple of days/
In 1968 I vividly remember Aztec G-ASTE of Northair crashing in Yeadon Cemetery killing 2 people. It was a foggy night and I was at the airport.
Interesting memory! I imagine that would have been a major incident with report etc.In 1978, I thought I saw an approaching BA Viscount overfly an Air Anglia F27 which was lined up on RW15 and land further down the runway. I say 'thought' because I have to doubt what I think happened. It was definitely 1978 though, as the F27 was from the Fokker loan fleet and was in the Linair livery. G-BFDS. I saw a lot of that particular aircraft at LBA that year.
My neighbour teaches flying at Sherburn. You may know him. Ex Trident captain with BEA back in the good days. I don't know his name - Peter I think.Working on the Stag today !
No I have two singles a PA28 Cherokee and a Grumman AA5B based at Sherburn and a PA23 Aztec based at Sandtoft which we are restoring back to flying condition unless I run out of funds first-
