That was a Cessna 414 G-BOAZ which was due to fly to Pakistan the next day for operations by the UN. Happened in 1980

The first accident I recall at the airport is British Midland DC-3 G-ANTD in 1965. The aircraft ran off the end of the runway(32) into the excavations was the extension. It was sat on a pile of earth for a couple of days/

In 1968 I vividly remember Aztec G-ASTE of Northair crashing in Yeadon Cemetery killing 2 people. It was a foggy night and I was at the airport.
I was on duty at Northair and stood in the reception area with the ICI driver waiting for it to land looking out towards the end of runway when the phone rang and Atc told us Captain Bell had just reported an accident.

In 1978, I thought I saw an approaching BA Viscount overfly an Air Anglia F27 which was lined up on RW15 and land further down the runway. I say 'thought' because I have to doubt what I think happened. It was definitely 1978 though, as the F27 was from the Fokker loan fleet and was in the Linair livery. G-BFDS. I saw a lot of that particular aircraft at LBA that year.

Interesting memory! I imagine that would have been a major incident with report etc.
I remember seeing G-BFDS, I think it made a few appearances as PH-ARO initially. I think I have an old photo of it somewhere - dark blue colour scheme.

That's the one DH. PH-MOL was its F28 equivalent.

I was probably seeing things at the time. Maybe the F27 was at the holding point as the Viscount passed and landed. I hope so but it did look very close, whatever happened.

DH106.... that low flying fokker...... you are absolutely correct. They had a certain captain, on the transit flights to EDI or NWI, with a handle-bar moustache, ex RAF naturally, whose departures were more akin to a lightning - undercarriage up very early, no climb, but plenty of speed.
Incidentally, getting airborne late or early did not indicate load whatsoever. If heavy, the F27s would use water meths to enhance performance and get airborne early, giving the impression of a light load.

The captain you speak of was a legend I dont think he is still with us so I wont mention his name.
The memory of topping up the water meth tanks of a Fokker F27 still fill me with dread.
The Handley Page Heralds had the same system and used it more often as it was so much heavier than the F27.

Working on the Stag today !
No I have two singles a PA28 Cherokee and a Grumman AA5B based at Sherburn and a PA23 Aztec based at Sandtoft which we are restoring back to flying condition unless I run out of funds first-

My neighbour teaches flying at Sherburn. You may know him. Ex Trident captain with BEA back in the good days. I don't know his name - Peter I think.

Wow, still flying after all these years. Prefer my feet on the ground nowadays. Been burning cuttings in the garden today, so the warmth is my fault. Off to watch the footy and keep my head down - why do enthusiasts think they know better than people who have spent decades in the industry?

Never see anybody over there when we go these days as we can only run the aircraft engines and have two hours to do so.
The head of training was a Jet 2 first officer but he has gone to Qatar now and the guy who runs the maintenance is ex Bmi and BA and is now a B757 captain for Jet 2 but looking to swop to the B738 to get a Leeds base back.

I believe it was around 2005/6 we had that A320 registered to a middle eastern airline nearly run off the end of runway 14 but the pilots saw the drop and the ils equipment at the end of the runway so he pulled it off to the right ending up a bit stuck on the grass! Believe they had to go to manual braking due to a malfunction but from what iv heard landing runway 14 with the runway slightly uphill then levelling off you cant see the end of the runway until much later than normal, although saying that the ils will give the amount of available runway left thru audio in the cockpit?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
