Air Portugal (TAP)

Discussion on the diversions forum prompted by the recent A319 Manchester diversion visit has made me raid the historical Barnsley Holidays files. The airline did make appearances many years ago!

Boeing 737-300s operated a weekly charter series in the summer of 1993 to Faro as TAP9647. Only four different aircraft made it to LBA with first visits from CS-TIH 07 May, CS-TIA 14 May, CS-TIG 21 May, and CS-TIF 04 June.

Remember when Leeds United played in European competitions? Airbus 320 CS-TNA arrived with the Maritimo team from Oporto as TAP9084 on 13 September 1998 and positioned out to Lisbon as TAP462P. The same aircraft came back on 16 September as TAP463P from Lisbon to take the team home to Funchal as TAP9085.

I hope this information is useful to old timers like me!

As a true Bradfordian myself it pains me to say that you cannot knock how well HTAFC are doing this season. Now as a true Yorkshireman let's hope BCFC and LUFC can join them in the top flight. That would increase the footy charters, albeit probably only domestic for the Londoners. Might also help BA on LHR but enough is being said about that elsewhere. And finally as a true LBA fan we still remain the number 1 in Yorkshire by a country mile

Offint, Leeds U lost 1-0 to Doncaster Rovers in the League 1 play-off final at the new Wembley stadium a few years ago. I was there with family. It was on a Sunday pm and we used the BMI service to LHR in what must have been its last few months of operation. I remember the fare was £50 return which compared favourably with the train and also meant the last leg of the journey to the stadium and the first leg of the return were against against the main flow of traffic so much quieter. Gutted by the final score though.

So you got a result with the airfair rather than the game.....

The point is, LUFC have been to the new Wembley contrary to your post. I was there too in the Play Off final. And I would think it was before Bradford City did. Yes, a rubbish result but Bradford City also know about that. I agree with Finger 66 - my wish is for the Premier League to have several Yorkshire clubs in it. It will be a better league for it too.

Calm down White Heather a little bit of banter thats all.....we we beat by Plymouth today who are bottom of the league....but life goes on. Yes I would love lots of Yorkshire teams in the Prem especially the West Yorks teams with The Terriers, Bantams and Super Leeds....but I fear I live in hope.....

I don't need to calm down. I am perfectly calm! How come what you post is banter and (apparently) what I post isn't? Banter works both ways :)

More to the point we're drifting away from the thread title which is Aviation Nostalgia.

We actually have part of the forum dedicated to sports if any of you would like to kick start a thread about Yorkshire teams over there? http://www.forums4airports.com/forums/524/

In the meantime, anybody got any Aviation Nostalgia photos they care to share?

Saratov Airlines - 20 April 2000

I agree Aviador, let's get this thread back on track.

A visitor at the turn of the century, Yak 42 RA42361 of Saratov Airlines is pictured on turnround on Stand 1.

I can't find any additional information regarding this visit, perhaps someone can help?

I think this might have been a charter for a team in the Intertoto Cup playing Bradford City. The team was from Lithuania from memory but I will stand corrected if wrong.

From what I remember some of the players absconded from the return flight and sort sanctuary in the UK

Lithuanian Airlines - 08 July 2000

Another Yak 42 visitor at the turn of the century which may be the one that 'scottrhino' refers to in the last posting.

LY-AAW of Lithuanian Airlines is pictured on a remote parking position, which looks to be in the Stand 14 area.

Barnsley Holidays has got me feeling nostalgic again so I have been searching thro' my records and I was at LBA on 20 April 2000 and took the YAK 42 lining up on 14. Sorry it's a poor scan)

Just in case anybody isn't aware we have our own forum gallery. We have a Leeds Bradford Photography Gallery for photos taken recently and a Yeadon Airport Gallery for the more Nostalgic pictures you want to share.

It's really easy to upload them here. Here's how to upload them: http://www.forums4airports.com/help/uploadphotos/

Here's how to post your images right here in the forums:
http://www.forums4airports.com/help/postingimages/

Uploading images as attachments is fine but they will eventually get lost in the system as they don't appear in the gallery. Eventually they will be deleted in forum clean-ups.

Because I have been in and out of Lba so many times in various size aircraft I would agree with you Tarn Spotter my crosswind landings are all the better for the practice. Never done a Cat 3 into Lba so cannot comment how quickly the red centre line lights appear but I have done several into Luton which is similar but a little more landing distance.

Still nostalgia but no picture evidence from my end, does anyone recall, from memory, the only Mozambique registered aircraft to grace LBIA.

In very windy conditions a de havilland Caribou made an couple of approaches on the old 09/27 runway only to be thwarted but I think landed thereafter.

The Interflug 134’s were also a delight to see with one landing in near zero visibility on 34. Daring but put it down

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
